Hi everyone! I just took advantage of the awesome New Year’s sale and bought a forever membership to Textfugu.

I’ve been interested in Japanese culture since I was pretty young, mostly due to all the awesome anime, video games, and toys they create, but the older I’ve gotten the more I’ve become interested in other aspects of the culture like Japanese cuisine and cultural customs. Aside from that, I’m highly interested in art, mysticism, and spirituality, so Japanese is the perfect language to study, as Japan has so rich a culture when it comes to those things. I have always wanted to be bilingual, so now that I’ve graduated college I’m treating myself to learning Japanese. I studied German for three years in High School, though I’ve forgotten nearly all of it due to non-use. Also learned Afrikaans while I was in South Africa for half a year. I live in the US, where I’ve lived all my life.

Like most of you, I really would love to visit Japan someday. It’s a dream of mine, and part of why I’m learning the language. I’m a Hanafuda “Koi Koi” addict just as much as I’m an anime addict, and I love lions! Lions are so awesome to me that I kind of act like a lion, so you can just call me Lion. It’s the nickname most people give me. I love sushi too! Oh man, I love it. Rawr! And sake just happens to be my favorite alcoholic drink. I have a pretty heavy preference towards Nigori Sake (the white, creamy, unfiltered kind).

Anyway, I am looking forward to learning Japanese with all of you. So far I only know what was taught in Season 1 of Textfugu. I’ve never learned any Japanese before that, so I’m a real beginner. I’d like to find some people online to chat with about Japan and to talk with in Japanese, but I’m not quite ready for that.

I hope you all have a great year this year, and here’s to happy days for us all!

    Warm hugs and roars!

    -Lion

    Hi and welcome!

    I’m a real beginner too, such a beginner that I’m still in season 1. I’m a slow learner :(

But if and when you want to practice online please let me know (if you’re still interested of course)! I’m not quite ready for that yet either but I’d love to practice with someone who wouldn’t laugh at me for being a horrible noob lol.

Carlie, I understand how ya feel. Haha. I may be treading rather slowly into season 2, as I spent a good amount of time working on the material from season 1, then took a few weeks off to do lots of holiday stuff, and ended up forgetting a lot of what I learned. I had the hiragana down pretty well (and katakana too), and now I can’t remember either one too well! I will probably just try to strengthen my hiragana for now though since katakana is covered in season 3. I had gone ahead and learned katakana after I finished season 1 and was waiting to have the money for membership. I may just hold off on reviewing katakana until I get to season 3. That might make it easier.

But yes, I’ll let you know when I’m feeling more comfortable and ready to talk to people online! Good luck to you as well! :)

@Carlie – Don’t be so down on yourself for being in Season 1! I’ve seen you say it a few times now, so honestly… the best thing you can be doing is cementing Hiragana into your brain. The more time spent doing that, the easier everything else will be when you move on. It’s awesome that you have the discipline to stick at doing it until it’s perfect! I wish I had that sort of concentration… then maybe I wouldn’t be stumbling every time I see た or は or にor な (those four always take an extra second to process!) it’s my own damn fault :P

    Noobs unite! ^^

@ooh_a_robot- thanks for the encouragement, i really appreciate it! :) I guess I just feel like I can’t contribute much other than welcoming new people atm because everything in Japanese is still so new to me (with the exception of hiragana now).

I wish I could help people more with any questions or problems they have but obviously i’m no where near that stage so instead i just refer them to you guys ;)

I feel like the welcome wagon lol. I hope people don’t get upset that I post to a lot of new people….I just want to return the warm welcome I received when I first introduced myself, and because I’m really excited about learning Japanese! :D

Nah that’s awesome… I always get a little sad if I see someone’s introduction sitting there for too long without a welcome message! Spread the love!

You’ll probably find that you progress quicker once you’re out of season 1, as you’ve put the time in to learn the basics. The basic grammar that’s coming is super easy to get your head round (well, so far… I’m only halfway through season 2 haha) so you’ll speed ahead a bit I’m sure ^^
