I think some people are a bit unfair on RTK.

The author of RTK doesn’t promise anything more then being able to attack the learning of Japanese from the perspective of someone from China where they already know the meaning of a particular kanji in their own language.  It is a huge time sink and it takes serious dedication to power through 2000+ of them and keep up on the reviews on anki if you want to do it in a reasonable time frame.  I’ve personally had a few stumbles along the way but the finish line is in sight for me thankfully.

Personally, I think it’s not a bad thing being able to recognise the main meaning of over 2000 kanji within a few months compared to some kid in Japan learning the same in 12 years.

I can only remember back to how lost I felt when I first saw a complex character and thinking there is no sense at all to this to now where simple mnemonics have blurred into instant character recognition.
