I was a little sad to see this on the topics of passion “something you could do 12 hours a day and not get bored (video games and tv don’t count!).”
What if video games are my passion? My case for why it counts:
* When I first taught myself to program it was to learn to write video games.
* During that time I worked on writing video games so much I went from 175 to 125 pounds and barely noticed.
* During that period in my life I wrote a graphics editor, pre-photoshop, for my games, and at least six video games.
* I’ve made programming my career because of the skills I taught myself.
* For the past month or so I’ve been designing a video game to help me study Japanese.
* For the past decade I’ve been designing games of all kind. (OK, most of them are card and board games.)So can we amend the video game passion thing? I feel invalidated a bit here. ;)

January 5, 2012 at 12:52 am #23665ARG A WEBSITE DISAGREES WITH ME!?!?
(first world problem)January 5, 2012 at 1:08 am #23666I really struggled with the passion list… Japan is my real passion, so ruling that out was kinda hard. Although now thinking about it properly, I could probably do Japan in general as a list, as that wouldn’t be ‘Japanese’ as such. Something to try this weekend I guess.
I tried to do photography as a list but most of the words were coming out in katakana, which I haven’t learnt yet. Booo.January 5, 2012 at 1:37 am #23670I skipped the passion list and just chose 20 common words instead, that feels like it was so long ago
January 5, 2012 at 7:01 am #23696Thanks for the supportive messages. I was really hoping to get a sense that I was on the right track with my passion choice, and not going off the deep end. It sounds like, by most of your feedback, that I’m OK. Maybe I’m taking the assignment too seriously, but it’s hard to not take your passion seriously. :)
I’m not worried about a website disagreeing with me. I’m concerned I wasn’t doing this correctly. If anyone read a negative tone in my original message, that was not intended, sorry for the confusion.
Now I face a similar problem as ooh_a_robot. Most of my passion list nouns seem to be borrowed words. I’m not getting anything by “memorizing” them. I tried to find native equivalents, but as far as a I can tell, they don’t exist or are rarely used. Also, turns out gaming has a lot of verbs. My next step is to look through some of my Japanese games I’ve imported, and see if I can spot and pull some common words from there.
I wonder if it would be useful for people to post their lists on the forums for reference, validation of translation, and to serve as ideas for others?
January 5, 2012 at 8:29 am #23700Hmmm well when I first started out, I chose Idols and then food as my passion lists. (lol food). lots of the stuff that I found even after what I thought was tedious searching and checking, turned out that it wasn’t commonly used words. But I think the passion lists can also serve as a help to get you used to “oh, it must be this word” rather this word when looking up stuff in the dictionary or just kinda nudging you to do searches yourself so that you can realize after awhile whats good and whats not good.
Threw out my passion list though.
January 6, 2012 at 3:54 pm #23937Got a few words into my Passion list then thought “Fuck THIS shit! :D” http://clipartist.net/openclipart.org/2011/June/24-Friday/fuck_that_face-555px.png (damn image embed not working :P). Didn’t make the slightest bit of difference. I’m most likely not going to get very far with 20 music-related words, a lot of which were just loanwords. I’m interested in learning Japanese anyway; I don’t need to try and “make it more fun”, like it’s some kind of chore.
I can’t really think what words you could even put on a video games list…?

January 6, 2012 at 7:39 pm #23949I think you might be looking too far into the list thing. I’ve just started season four and completely forgot about the list until you brought it up. The whole idea of the exercise was to get you figuring out words that mean something to you in Japanese that you could use once you forge that core understanding. If you can’t fill the list or have trouble finding translations (some of them have several Japanese translations), don’t sweat it. Work with the ones you have, spend a bit of time figuring out how to read and pronounce them, then move on.

January 6, 2012 at 8:28 pm #23952I see what you guys are saying thanks for the reality check!
I guess it’s tricky to know when I’m being too gun ho about something or not. Since I’m not in a class room, I guess, I’m leaning on the side of caution.
January 7, 2012 at 7:33 am #23991Yeah, when I started Textfugu, I thought to myself “I’ll do everything by the book, exactly as he says, even if it seems tedious, cause it’ll probably help”, just since I tend to skip a lot of the boring “practice” parts of most textbooks (maths, chemistry, etc.). Some people need that, but I don’t think it works for me – making 10 sentences with です in them just isn’t fun! :P So I gave up on the Passion list. Much better to spend time learning words that you might actually need to use at some point haha. Learn the 20 most common nouns instead of 20 obscure ones.
February 8, 2012 at 9:48 am #26439It was originally my career as well until I realized I was going to college in the US for Game Design. I only ended up abhorring American game design more than I did before. Now I’m most likely going to just finish my current AS and then go into chemistry or whatever will help me make a decent living in Japan.
Michael: I ended up coming to similar conclusions, but made my passion list a bunch of basic words that might help me engage in philosophical discussion such as ‘truth’, ‘knowledge’ and ‘ideals’.

February 8, 2012 at 10:39 am #26445Ultimately I ended up going with terms that are related to Mountain Biking. It’s a hobby of mine that I really enjoy. I’m not passionate about it like I am with gaming, but I was able to find about 12-14 nouns and verbs that aren’t loaned words related to it. Also, I sometimes like to come up with sentences in Japanese while riding, so having words related to riding would be helpful.
February 9, 2012 at 9:10 am #26520Are you wanting to learn development related words? Most of them are foreign words spelled out with katakana based in computer science as far as programming is concerned. And the rest is related to art assets and the production process, which should contain many other basic words.
February 9, 2012 at 9:32 am #26521Knowing development related words would definitely be helpful for me professionally as I’m trying to get to a point where I can telecommute from Japan.
