The first section of page 5 begins with turning 好き and きらい into questions. Right after the first example it’s shown that when a question is asked using が好き, then you can reply with は instead of が. However I was talking in a chat room with some other Japanese learners, and someone from Japan. They were saying that using は in a sentence like いぬは好きです is implying that you don’t like something else. I was told that while it isn’t wrong to switch to は for the answer, it would sound more natural to stick with が. I was just wondering if anyone could confirm this or straighten this out. Thanks.

は can be used for comparison, so I think that’s where they’re coming from.
That would make sense, the Japanese guy told me that it’s okay to use it and it’s understood because even though you’re implying that you don’t like something else, it doesn’t imply what that something else is, and of course everyone has to dislike something, so it’s kind of just ignored anyway? Either way he said with the が was more natural, not sure if you’ve noticed either way

I am going to hijack this thread for a small question, also regarding season 3:

It says the following:スーパー を でましたか？
Did you exit the supermarket?You should know that the に particle is used in situations where movement or direction is involved. – http://www.textfugu.com/season-3/doing/7-5/#top
Why use the を (wo) particle when the sentence is about exiting (movement)? Shouldn’t it use the に (ni) particle instead? :)

I can’t remember the exact explanation, but I was told that the verb 出る「でる」 is an exception that has to take the を particle. Something about an area traversed, not necessarily a direction that you are going towards.
Okay, thanks. I assume a Japanese would understand it easily anyway. For future references, do you know about a place to look up grammar exceptions like that? (assuming it isn’t covered later in TextFugu) :)
It’s not that 出る is an exception, but that を can mean “through” or “from” with movement verbs. For example:
公園に歩く = Walk to the park
公園を歩く = Walk through the park -
