    I’m still on season 3, but I was wondering those who has finished season 8. What can you do? Like are you able to read blogs, books, newspaper now? Basically, what’s your results after finishing season 8?

    LOL. I finished Textfugu two(?) years ago, and even after I finished it I wasn’t able to read anything.

    Textfugu is not going to advance you very far in the language, really. Koichi calls it “advanced”, but the whole thing is really just for beginners, to be honest.

    The kanji here doesn’t go that far, but I’ll at least say that Koichi is doing a fair job on Wanikani.

    The grammar here is really basic, limited and isn’t organized well in my opinion. And I’ve said this before, but you can learn more Japanese from a 200-800 yen book bought in Japan or even in Hong Kong. Really cheap.

    If you want to learn more grammar, you can consider TaeKim’s Guide to Learning Japanese. Completely free on his website. And if you want to be able to read more kanji, then Wanikani is good. These two things alone were sufficient enough for me to become able to read manga, basic newspapers, light novels, and understand Narita Airport employees’ announcements. And watch anime and movies.

    I never actually finished Textfugu. Actually, I went through all of the content that was here at the time I started learning, but that was a long time ago where there were only 2 or 3 seasons or chapters or whatever they were called then. That only took about 2 weeks to get through since I’d already learned the kana. Needless to say, after finishing that content, I couldn’t understand anything.
    I haven’t really looked much at the content that has been added since then. There was a period where I checked from time to time to see if there was anything new added that I hadn’t already learned on my own, but that was never the case. The truth is, and I think this applies to a lot of the people on this forum, that Textfugu never kept up with me. I just looked through the table of contents now and I would say that getting through the content of this site would not enable you to delve into anything native. You will still be a beginner when you are done.
    With that said, I don’t think that Textfugu is a waste of time. Many people start learning a language, get lazy, give up, pick it back up again a year later, and repeat; they never really get anywhere. I would not say that these people are “beginners”, but “interested parties”. Getting through Textfugu, in my opinion, puts you at the point where you can really call yourself a beginner. You’ve learned the very basics and you’ve invested some effort, time, and money into the process. Those three investments make it less likely you’ll give up. If learning Japanese is a long journey, finishing Textfugu is like getting your bags packed.

    So would you guys suggest to just use Tae Kim’s guide/WaniKani? Because right now I do feel Textfugu is a bit too easy, and I can remember the kanji and stuff pretty fast right now. Or should I at least finish the entire season and then move on to another Japanese guide?

    I agree with everyone here.

    @thisiskyle: While there were 3 seasons back then (no. 3 wasn’t exactly finished though, I don’t think), he changed the format so that each season was pretty much split into two. So what we called season 3 then is roughly season 5+6 now. That means the fact there’re only 8 seasons so far is just ridiculous – it’s taken him 2 years to get the old season 4 done ¬_¬

    Just had a look at the contents of season 8: wow, all that stuff should be covered in one *lesson*, no idea why he’s split it up and spread over one *season*. I used to like Koichi, but I find him a bit of dick these days for stuff like this; it’s pretty ridiculous he’s still taking people’s money for this shit. Hashi was the good one but now he’s gone ;_;
