Has this ever happened to you?

You go reading your native Japanese material or take a look at a list of words of Japanese words you need to know, saw a certain word and said to yourself, “When am I ever gonna use this?”. Or perhaps you saw an interesting word you wanted to learn but doubted its usefulness?

IF THIS APPLIES TO YOU, YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE TO WIN $1,000,000!!! POST SIMILAR EXPERIENCES YOU HAD HERE IN THIS THREAD AND TELL OTHER PEOPLE THAT A CERTAIN WORD ISNT USELESS!

    For example:

When I was looking up 小豆島 on wikipedia, I saw the word 衛星 which you can see on the right side of that page and was like “LOL WHEN AM I EVER GONNA NEED THIS WORD”. Then a couple of days later when I got Death Note in Japanese for a $1 each at the NYC BookOff…..

    OR

The time when I came across the word 淑やか and I had to learn it as a result of doing J-J Anki cards, (淑やか by the way, is one of the definitions of 慎ましい, the other definition for that word is 控えめ → http://tinyurl.com/d76e9ez ) and wondered if I would ever come across it again. A couple of weeks later….

    この情報が警察に渡れば警察は あっという間にキラ=夜神月の見解に辿り着く…

I guess 辿り着く is not all that uncommon, but I hadn’t seen it anywhere other than Death Note…

Then I saw/heard it again a day after adding the previous sentence to anki
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQqLKCg-UgA    (3:05)

and I must say, it felt good.

Also たかが名前を確認するだけじゃないか… again from death note, this time たかが

    and saw it again here:

Hmmm I’m sensing a pattern… For some strange reason, after seeing “x” word more than once (in the wild) I start noticing it more (in the wild).

EDIT: again, it’s not like these words are rare or useless, maybe just slightly uncommon. At least something I didn’t expect to see anytime soon

    btw, did I win?

I really, really wish I knew >.< I think I stumbled upon it accidentally while hopping around Google. No idea if it’s just some kid’s Deviant-Art creation, or if this is a main character of a multi-season anime, haha.
