えいが を み に いきたかったら ”Cineplex” に いきたい です。
If we go to see a movie, I want to go to “Cineplex.”With the above sentence, I’m a little confused by the translation. Wouldn’t “if we go to see a movie” be “えいが を み に いったら” where いく -> いった -> いったら? “えいが を み に いきたかったら” seems like it should mean “if we WANT to go see a movie” from いきたい -> いきたかった -> いきたかったら. Is there something about the たい form where is has to match in the previous clause and you can’t have that same nuance as in English? Or was this just an oversight in the translation? Or is there something else I’m overlooking completely?

Aye, that one comes up here in the forums regularly. It’s a mistake in the translation – your analysis is completely correct. I’m impressed – it’s often really tricky to spot conjugations of the ～たい suffix.
Thanks for the reply! And yeah, that does seem to be a tricky one. I’m pretty good at deconstructing written sentences usually, where I can take my time and analyze them, but I’d have a lot more trouble catching it spoken.
