Learning Japanese is my first, major self-learning experience. I’m sure this is the case for a few people on here. One thing I’ve found is that when you have nobody expecting/demanding results of you, i.e. a teacher/classmates, you have nothing pushing you to put in that EXTRA effort.
Now, and this might be a strange idea, but why don’t we jot down some concrete study goals for ourselves, with deadlines, in this thread? A bit like giving yourself an assignment. It’s one thing to say to yourself: “I really need to write a lang-8 post soon” – it’s a different thing altogether to tell a whole forum that: “I will write a lang-8 post about XX on *date*”. I think that putting down, and publishing, some short-term study goals like this would really help me get motivated and actually put in some extra effort! And if that holds true for me, why shouldn’t it for you!?
By short-term I’m thinking, say, a week tops. It might also be a good idea to return to the thread and post once a goal has been accomplished.
With all that being said, I will write a Lang-8 post on Japanese radio stations (min. 100 words), deadline: 11/01! :D

January 9, 2012 at 4:17 pm #24171Checking on me, are you? Fine, http://lang-8.com/314751 :D
I only have one entry so far and that was a while back, which I guess is proof I need the extra motivation.

Also, come on guys. This idea won’t work if I’m the only one doing it :<
January 10, 2012 at 10:17 am #24199Ok, I’ll toss my hat into the ring. By the end of today, I’m going to catch up on my vocab deck. I fell behind over Christmas and then getting sick but only have 108 cards left. It’s killing me that I haven’t been able to get that number down to 0 yet. Today I will catch up on Anki!
January 10, 2012 at 12:04 pm #24218Yes! You have to prove it with a picture once you have, though! :D
January 10, 2012 at 1:13 pm #24219January 10, 2012 at 9:42 pm #24255Tomorrow I will catch up on setting up my Anki. I had it set up and then I had to reinstall everything on my laptop so I fell behind and I would do it tonight, but it’s late and I’m troubleshooting my Wii…

… Okay, but if I lose the meager amount of friends I have on there, I’m blaming you.January 10, 2012 at 10:05 pm #24258Why would you lose friends by posting short term study goals?
January 10, 2012 at 10:23 pm #24260Today I will start studying new material again. I did nothing but Anki reps for three weeks :(
January 11, 2012 at 2:15 am #24264I see what you did there, Index :o
Also, we’re on a roll in here. Feels good to get something done!
January 11, 2012 at 5:23 pm #24302I got my Anki decks imported! *gives myself a cookie*
