Hello. How are you all today?
I was wondering if you could please help me with my confusion. The sentence “テニス を します” translates to “I will play tennis,” though します means to do. That’s a little odd for me to understand. Why isn’t it “テニス を あそびます”?
For the similar reason as to why you don’t “play swimming”.
When talking about sports. you use the verb します rather than あそびます. I think あそびます is used when saying things like playing instruments.

No, 遊びます is intransitive. It’s a verb meaning to play, enjoy yourself, have a good time.
If you want to use it with an object you’d need another verb first, like:
歌を歌って遊んだ。
テニスをして遊んだ。

Instrument-playing has its own set of verbs depending on what type of instrument it is.
