    So I’m reviving this thread..
    iKnow.. mint..

Like proper mint. I struggled with the Vocab sheet’s and Anki for days and days and days.. Probably coming on weeks..
A weekend with iKnow – 100 words down.. Boom.

Will stick with it for now, however this is by far an easier path for vocab than I imagined it would be. 5,900 words to go.

You’re assuming that the spacing and repetition method used by iKnow is of the same or higher efficiency than that of anki. It may well be the case that you feel like you are moving a lot faster but will have more problems with retention later.
Note that I’m not saying that this is the case. I honestly have no idea. But, if I remember correctly and if it hasn’t changed, iKnow eventually stops showing you material once you have “mastered it”. I never liked that policy because as soon as you stop reviewing, you start forgetting. Of course if you are using the language and these are the most common words, then that shouldn’t be a problem anyway.

iKnow never stops reviewing mastered courses. Even words I mastered over a year ago will still come back up for review eventually. Though you can remove words that are too easy if you wish.

Plus you can play their Brain Speed game to get some quick practice on any courses, without waiting for the words to come up for review.

    Thanks for the correction. :)

You are still right about anki being the better SRS, and that combined with the fact that there are fewer cards per word(I think cores website is slight overkill, and some of the card styles I don’t really like) + there are cards with the entire sentence(audio and kanji) makes me prefer the custom anki decks. I do want listening practice with entire sentences, and that is the custom anki deck much better at :). I do agree that the core website & core decks are pretty good for learning vocab ^^ It is nice to see everything in context.

I think like most things you can find free workarounds, but a premium service will usually give you a better level of service and I think that rings true for iKnow. I’m liking it quite a lot so far, it’s a bit boring as I know the majority of Core1k so I’m blazing through it pretty quickly! The sentences are really nice, I’m reading a book with “every” Japanese particle so it’s making me remember stuff from that too.

It’s also kind of motivational as I had no idea I knew over 500 words already.

Anki definitly has it’s place, and no one is knocking the efficiency it has as an SRS – however iKnow’s parent company is basically an SRS builder.. Cerego or something, it’s all a bit flash and showy offy about what they can acheive.. however, so far.. for vocab, iKnow is holding up better than Anki.. Kanji Anki still wins on.

@Yggbert – What book are you reading? Sounds like it could be a laugh! ^_^

In this case I do actually think he “premium service” is inferior. Sure it has some nice statistics, but aside from that it doesn’t really have anything going for it – at least not of things that I like. I thought it was great at first, and I still have like 4 months left of my membership, so it is not that I care about the cost. I just find the custom decks fit my needs much better. But then again this is solely personal preference. I don’t need 9+ cards for 1 word – 5 is fine. What I do need, is the better listening training ^^
I do still do some the brainspeed every once in a while, but that feature is free, so my sub is pretty useless at the moment :(

    A) So many particles
    B) That が has so many uses

“reference guide to the 70 common particles used in the Japanese language” – 70… wow – Ok, maybe i should go re-think everything.

This seems interesting: http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Common-Japanese-Collocations-Kakuko-Shoji/9784770031235 – Anyone have any experience or any other resources for this?

I’d only order from the Book Depository if Amazon UK hasn’t got a book in stock. Book Depository don’t have a contact number, so contacting them is only done by email which can take upto 24 hours to receive a reply. Delivery is slow too. I ordered a book on a Monday morning once and it arrived Friday. For a company that’s in the UK I think that is extremely slow compared to Amazon that deliver next day or two days max for an item that’s in stock. They send their items by second class post. I’d only order from them as a last resort.

    @ iso
That book is cheaper on Amazon and you’ll still get it quicker if you don’t want to pay p+p and choose super saver delivery. There’s only three left in stock as of me writing this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Common-Japanese-Collocations-Learners-Frequent/dp/4770031238/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334840663&sr=8-1

Also, you should compare reviews between A Dictionary of Japanese Particles and All About Particles.

The book I posted is on Amazon, I was annoyed when I went back to my bookmark to find it out of stock. It was definitely a little slow coming from Book Depository, blergh.

The subscription pricing is in ¥ What do they accept in payment? Paypal?

What would be the minimum TextFugu level that would benefit by joining?

Currency is in ¥ and they use Paypal, yes. Theres a monthly plan or fixed pricing if you buy several month at a time.

Well try it – you should know at least a little bit of basic grammar, so you can understand the example sentences grammatically wise. Aside from that, I think it’s always great to learn vocab, no matter what level.
