I hate to admit it but I think iKnow is a really useful tool for learning vocab. I’m currently using my 5 free study sessions through the Core 1000. I doubt I’ll be able to afford paying my Mum for the £8 (1000 yen) a month though but if I tell her it’s for Japanese vocab and even show her how useful it is I might manage to get her to pay for it. ;o
I’ll still be using my trusted Anki for reviewing what I learned at my Japanese tutor’s house though.
May 11, 2012 at 8:25 pm #30628Having to make Anki keep everything in sync, including on my phone and iPad is more hassle than its worth. The Anki iPad app is just annoying as hell when it comes to the media syncing, so for me iKnow is worth it alone because I can use it on anything with a web browser or an Android/iOS tablet or phone. It’s certainly possible to get everything up and running on Anki, but I think syncing is annoying for that application. I’m with Elenkis 100% on this, the iKnow style of things is nicer to use than Anki’s cards too.
I realise I’m a pretty specific case but getting Anki to work perfectly across my laptop, PC, Android phone and iPad was just incredibly annoying at times, it’d often have a mishap with the sync counts and let’s not even discuss how annoying media syncing is on anything except computers.

May 12, 2012 at 7:01 am #30663I haven’t had any syncing problems for a long while with Anki, though I did in the beginning (android and PC). I think four devices is way too many to keep track of, that would definitely be a hassle.
I really like Anki because I can use it offline (no 3g and wifi everywhere I go), so I can sneak some reviews while I’m at work. I don’t think iKnow and Anki are mutually exclusive. Even if I used iKnow I would still have Anki for all the other stuff I’m learning.
May 12, 2012 at 11:13 am #30682I saw this thread a while ago and decided to give iKnow a try. I’ve been at it for about a month now and I can’t say I regret the choice! I actually kind of look forward to doing iKnow reviews each day, though it’s having the unfortunate side effect of making Anki feel more tedious by comparison. I feel like I’m really dragging my feet to get through my Anki reviews every day (ultimate vocab decks + kanji).
I started using the syncing thing with Anki because I had to go on some long drives that would have me away from my main computer the whole day, so I did that, synced everything to my laptop and now I’m having problems where probably only 10% of the audio ever plays on either computer…! Not so good for those “What is this word [that was just spoken] in English?” cards.
I guess I’ll be getting a smartphone soon and I’ve definitely been wanting to use it to help me keep up the Japanese studies when I’m out and about, so I’ve been curious about the iKnow app and whether or not it would be usable offline. I take it from what クリス said about Anki being nice because it’s usable offline, that’s a no? Maybe that won’t be so terrible for me if the school I’ll be spending much of my time at has WiFi anyway.
May 12, 2012 at 11:38 am #30683You download the course content on the iKnow mobile apps, so it’s possible it’ll work offline. I’ll try it out, of course like Anki it can only operate on the last time you synced so it’s probably going to be slightly out of sync but it might work.
Edit: Just tried it, it works offline! Audio/images all work fine.
May 12, 2012 at 1:41 pm #30690That’s good to know! Thanks for checking that out! It’s nice to not have to have study sessions restricted to areas where I can access the internet even if the whole syncing thing can be a bit awkward.

Ah, didn’t know that. :) Good info.
