Greetings everyone,
I got my membership up and running this morning (yay) so I wanted to drop in and say hello!
I’ve toyed around with the idea of Learning Japanese for some time. But I always ignored the desire, telling myself it was impractical and not possible. Then about two years ago I became acquainted with an amazing young man in Brazil who is now a fast friend. He is fluent in several languages and has been a source of inspiration to me when it comes to learning, language and the value of having a deeper understanding of other people and cultures.
Lately I have been thinking about some of the things I want to accomplish in life. And it suddenly hit me. What am I waiting for? There will never be a better time or place to pursue my goals.
So…..here I am. And these are my reasons for learning Japanese:
1. I have had an interest in Japan for many years. It’s people, history, culture, art etc. I feel like the time has come to stop the casual dabbling and actually take the time to learn about Japan. Learning the language seems like perhaps the best way to start.
2. I hope to travel to Japan with a good friend (mentioned above) in another 4 or 5 years from now. It seems to me, that gives me a very good reason to study the language.
3. One of my life goals is to become fluent in a foreign language. Considering my interests. Why not learn Japanese?I am just an ordinary guy, living in Southern Idaho! I operate a Landscape Management company (did I mention I am super interested in Japanese Gardens?) which keeps me somewhat busy in the summer time. In my time off I enjoy playing video games, reading books and starting alot of pencil drawings I never finish.
I’m looking forward to getting to know you all, and being part of the TextFugu community.
Cheers!
MatthewMarch 3, 2012 at 3:23 pm #27304Good luck! I’m a season 2 beginner … keeping a study diary is crucial for my learning. I keep it on a flash drive using Word. I try to have something to write in it each day plus it’s a great place to put links to web based info I find.
For a good dictionary give http://tangorin.com/ a try, a free acct lets you keep a vocabulary list plus you can save it to a txt file that can be imported into Anki.
Much success!March 4, 2012 at 7:18 am #27326As was suggested, I downloaded and am using Evernote to use as my Japanese language log and keep all my notes, observations etc. I’d never hear of it before but I find I am really liking the program.
I literally just started, so I have no idea when I will start using programs like Anki or Smart.fm dictionaries are always nice so I’ll have to check that link out. I suppose TextFugu will point me in the right direction when I need to start looking into these sorts of things.
Thank you for the well wishes!

AnonymousWelcome to Textfugu! Hope you enjoy learning Japanese!
jisho.org is practically the greatest dictionary in the world, no kidding. Possibly even better than electronic dictionaries found at stores.
If you have any questions feel free to ask the forum!March 4, 2012 at 8:00 pm #27348Thank you for the warm welcome. I appreciate it.
And dont worry. I’m sure I’ll be asking my share of questions here on the forums. :P
March 5, 2012 at 10:16 am #27362Hey Matthew, welcome to TextFugu. You said that you’re interested in Japanese gardens – are there any in Idaho? Here in Portland we have a beautiful Japanese gardens that you should visit if you ever swing through town.
Good luck with your studies!

No there are no Japanese Gardens in Idaho. At least not any that are worth mentioning in any Japanese Garden journals or ranking lists etc.
I have actually visited the Portland Japanese Garden. I thought it was an absolutely stunning garden and enjoyed my visit very much. That was the summer of 2010. I could easily see myself going back for another visit.
Thank you for the welcome, I am very happy to be here.
