Has anyone here studied abroad in Japan? or at least looked into it? If so can you post some information about it. After I am pretty descent with some basic language I would like to go.
I’m currently living in Japan studying, but not formally at a language school. Actually my coworker who is finishing his contract in October will be starting a language school in January next year.
But regardless, coming to Japan to work or study will drastically improve your Japanese. Especially if you come here with a solid foundation to build on.
I did a short study abroad in high school with a program called YFU. It’s super great if you’re in high school and is a fun way to get a better understanding of another culture in a short period (7 weeks or so). http://www.yfu.org/
I made a friend from Australia who is studying in the Nagoya area (where I live) right now. She’s a university student, and her Australian school is sisters schools with this Japanese one, thus the exchange. So if you’re choosing colleges, look for one with a sweet deal like this.
And, of course, there are tons of language schools across Japan! A short Google search should reveal a ton!
@kiaifighter – where are you currently living in japan? what are your accomadations like? what is the cost of living in your area? what are you currently doing for a living? what type of contract is your co worker on?
@rachel- lol im long gone from high school so that is out of the window.
I am considering joining the military upon finishing anesthesia school because I figure that will be the only way I can live and work in japan as a CRNA since the United States is pretty much the only country that utilizes nurses for anesthesia. Who knows maybe ill just save up some money and buy a place in Japan then visit it on extended vacations lol. That would be a long time from now that is why I am looking for a school out there. Ill do my research in time I was just seeing what other forum members had to say.
Well it’s important to note that unless you are from a country that offers a Working Holiday Visa (only good for one year) with Japan then you will need at least a 4 year degree from college before you can get a work visa. Since it looks like your from the USA that option is not available. If you are a student then I believe you can work part time on your student visa.
There are a couple of ways you can study in Japan (I have researched this extensively).
1) You can go directly to a Japanese university and study there if you can pass the entrance exams, typically you will need extensive knowledge of Japanese language first however.
2) If you are just interested in learning language you can go to a Japanese language school in Japan.
3) You can enter a transfer program with your local university, usually these are for periods ranging from one month to one calender year. You will have to speak with your university to find out what programs are available. (This is the route I am planning on taking)
4) You can attend a university from your country that has a campus in Japan. In the USA I know of only one, Temple University. They are recognized by the Japanese government so their credits and degrees are considered to be equivalent to those offered by Japanese universities, you also get all of the student benefits offered to Japanese students, such as the Japanese student ID card that gets you discounts on some things in Japan. Also since they are still technically a US university you can still receive financial aid from the US government such as FAFSA loans and pell grants.
That’s all I know of, if anyone else can provide more please do. I’m always interested to know more on this subject as well.
