Hi Koichi, hope you read this post eheh :)
First of all congratulation for the excelent work you put on Textfugu,my post want not to be a critique or something to your work, just an honest “report” of my personal point of view, about how I feel Textfugu,so I hope it somehow help to improve it :)

I am now on Season 6, I know more than 1000 vocabs & 150-200 kanjis, I am learning 15 new words each day (that will go onto the SRS) & I actually already know some grammar point that I didn’t studied here, because when I study new words I also read at least 1 example sentence that uses it,so if I found some new grammar point,I need to check it up to grasp the meaning of the whole thing.

Textfugu is excellent in doing what it does, but the more I learn, the more I found hard to use it!

I know this last phrase sound strange,so it require some explanation.
You see,it is simply perfect the way you approach the japanese teaching on the first seasons, you are there to hold the beginners hands & you hold back a lot of knowledges just to prevent to the tiny begginner to run away scared & overwhelmed from the 日本語 “monster”,with all his “scary” kanjis & “arcane” grammar points.
In this way,you allowed me to hold on & stick with it long enough to don’t be afraid anymore & to make the japanese study a daily routine. I mean,at the point where I am, with more than 1000 words on my back & the ability to start to understand a lot of sentences, even if I am still a begginner,I will never be discouraged again thinking of “how hard” would be to learn it & I’ll never go back, since I have already achieved so much…though, probably is only 1/10 – 1/20 of what I need to reach my “Ok Plateau” & play japanese games without a dictionary, yet I am proud of it & after this effort, anyone would have make up their own mind about sticking with it till the end of the journey no matter what.

That beign said, the problem is that I am on Season 6, & I still feel as you where keeping my hand in the study of this language…actually to be honest, feels a bit kind of if I where too dumb to hold the knowledge in my hand, thus it had to be processed & explained in an easy way by you ^_^’
& this totally doesn’t work well for me,because I passed the stage where that particular kind of guidance was required, now it’s time to walk with my own legs, right?
Of course, this could be my own personal feeling about Textfugu & could be that noone else share this vision,or maybe I have advanced too much in vocab/grammar outside the site so that I shouldn’t be on Season 6 but on an hypothetical season 11,so is my fault to have leved textfugu behind a bit during my study (I use lot of different resources ^_^’)

But I would like to remind you of a video speech you linked on the site, where the guys explained the OK Plateau & why some people keep improving & some other stop improving, even doing something for lots of hours.

Bottom line is that I have this burning feeling that in order to improve more you have to show the ones who are ready, the hard study way (so not only keeping our hands a bit less, but also, for example, using some more difficult vocabs in the example sentences, not the usual taberu, nomu, miru, kuru, iku wich appears at least in the 70% – 80% of the example sentences ^_^’) & belive in the fact that we can easily handle it without beign discouraged as in the beggining.

Again, keep the good work up,I hopes that my feelings about the site will help in some way or another ;)

    —————–

That was for Koichi guys, this next question is for you all:
how do you feel about what I said? I am the only one with that particular vision or you can relate somehow?
    Let me know :)

Your post is very wonderful, but I can say with confidence that Koichi did not read this at all.

Thanks for letting me know guys,I have emailed it :)

Firstly, the idea of Koichi being here to read this is laughable :P Maybe if you’d posted this 2 – 3 years ago, you would have got a decent response (but then it wouldn’t make any sense).

Secondly, you really didn’t need to write so much :D You don’t have to say “Koichi, you’re perfect, this website is perfect, I love it, I love you. There’s also a small issue I wanted to raiseBUT DON’T GET ME WRONG this is all my fault and not your fault and I should have held back my studying to fit around TextFugu and…” – he’s a busy man these days, doing so many non-TextFugu-related things, keep it concise and to the point and he’ll be more likely to answer. Even back in the day when I used to email him a lot, he switched to this “3 line reply” system of handling emails: I’m not sure if he still does it, but he switched to only sending really short replies because he was getting so many emails and was spending too much time on them. Your concern might warrant a longer reply but I’m just illustrating the point that he’s busy, so the less he has to read the better. He won’t think any less of you if you don’t heap the praise on him :P

Well,I didn’t know Koichi’s schedule,I am also not good on summarize things up,if he will not find time to read nor to response,is understandable, not a problem :)

Thing is,you guys still didn’t shared how do you feel about, that’s the important/interesting thing for me ;)

I agree with your post. I feel like browsing through lessons is tough because there’s so many pages of “hand holding” material. If I want to find a specific grammar point i have to check each page which takes forever (they used to be titled, right?) And the sentences DO all use the same vocab words most of the time. Never really thought about that but it’s very true.

However, since this “big update” is coming “soon” maybe this won’t even be an issue anymore. But who knows, really… DOES ANYONE KNOW?! Maybe he’s going to copy and paste it all into a new layout or something.

A big update is coming?! I didn’t even know about it :O

I just checked it out right now,it says under “Next:”–> “I’m hoping 20 or so lessons geared towards intermediate to advanced self-study. Maybe more, maybe less, but that’s the goal.”

    There is hope :D
Now I hope my mail didn’t reach him,or it will slow him down xD

I definitely think there is too much filler in TextFugu. He takes pages and pages to say what should take a few lines; Season 8 is a perfect example of this: its entire contents could probably fit on all of two pages (one for explanation, one for example sentences). He should really be using more varied vocab too – if there’s a word included in an example sentence that hasn’t been covered in the previous vocab lists, is it *really* too difficult to either work it out from context (in the English translation) or to just look it up in a dictionary?

    For example:
受付にペンを返して願書が机に置いた。- I gave the receptionist the pen and left the application form on the desk.

Now, ignoring the fact that the sentence most likely doesn’t make sense, if you already know the words:
    受付 – receptionist
    ペン – pen
    返す – to return (something)
    置く – to place
is it really that difficult to work out that 願書 means “application form”? It’s probably *better* to learn words in context like this, instead of solely relying on just what’s covered by the ultimate vocab lists.

Basically, hand-holding is fine in the beginning, but it really needs to taper off as you progress.

    He actually replied today :P

He says that totally agree & that actually is the thing he is focusing for the next revision, though would be a while before it is ready

    a quote from his mail:

“I want to lessen the hand holding and get people in on doing things themselves more. Maybe helping people with the transition more, but in the end, letting you out of the nest more effectively :)”

    :D
