こんにちはTextFuguの皆さん、
I was just curious to know…
How many people here at TextFugu got a membership because they like anime? Even if it’s just partly because of it.ジャレッド
January 15, 2012 at 12:01 am #24412probably at least half
January 15, 2012 at 1:34 am #24414Not me, I’ve watched a bit of anime since starting to learn Japanese but I generally don’t like it.

January 15, 2012 at 10:32 am #24434I’d watched next to nothing before I started learning. And I still don’t :D
January 15, 2012 at 12:10 pm #24442That’s because your a crazy person.
January 15, 2012 at 2:19 pm #24443じゃあ。。。アニメは好き、でもそれはちょっと。。。
I do like anime, and one of my main reasons for learning Japanese is so that I can enjoy a book/film/game/article in the same way that a native speaker would, but as Koichi said in one of his old posts, it’s probably not the best motivation on its own.
January 15, 2012 at 3:04 pm #24446I’m not gonna lie, I originally started learning Japanese because of anime/manga/games. I still like those things now, so does it make my reasons for learning the language impure?! OAO
Well, these days, I also learn it because I find that the process of learning the language is kinda fun.
January 15, 2012 at 4:01 pm #24449I think it’s more along the lines that unless you’re unbelievably obsessed, then watching stuff probably isn’t a big enough reward for several years of consistent hard work, and as things get more difficult, you’ll likely decide that it’s not worth it and quit.
I can’t lie, all that untranslated media is my biggest motivator, but if Japanese wasn’t fun, or if I didn’t ever want to visit Japan, it wouldn’t be enough to keep me going.January 15, 2012 at 10:19 pm #24463I don’t see why it’s so bad for someone to want to learn Japanese on account of anime anyway. By and large Japanese-learners seem to look down on anime fans for whatever reason. Not liking anime is almost treated like a badge of honour.
I’ve known people who were learning German/Spanish/French/etc just to watch foreign cinema from those countries, and they don’t catch nearly the same flak for it that anime fans do.
That being said, I myself disliked anime before embarking on learning Japanese. Once I’d started learning it, I began to watch it more and then became a big fan. Now I am no longer studying Japanese, but I remain an anime fan nonetheless. So I guess in my case it was backwards; I didn’t try to learn Japanese ’cause of anime, but I liked anime ’cause of Japanese. :P
January 15, 2012 at 11:11 pm #24465anime as lerning material = good
anime as good motivator = debatable
wheter you like animes doesnt matter

January 15, 2012 at 11:35 pm #24467Ah, I’ve heard of a few people like that from my brother’s Japanese classes. They remind me of that SNL skit on weeaboos. It’s kinda painful to hear about people like that sometimes.
And yes, the untranslated stuff is very motivating indeed! Although, it is kind of difficult to translate things when you come across unusual patterns of speech in games or anime.
January 16, 2012 at 12:07 am #24469I’ve liked anime since before I even knew what anime actually was, but it wasn’t much of a factor in my decision to learn Japanese. While it is true that the ending song to Cowboy Bebop really got me thinking about learning (due in large part to reading the various translations of the lyrics), the main driving factor for me has always been the fact that I’m part Japanese.
January 16, 2012 at 1:57 am #24473I love anime, but it’s not the main reason I’m here. It did make me realise I wanted to learn, when I started to pick up odd phrases here and there without really trying.. I thought it would be cool to understand more than just the odd word.
However, it goes a lot deeper than that… in that I’m fascinated with everything Japan has to offer. I want to visit and not feel so lost… I want to meet people and converse with them… buy some food without sounding like an ignorant tourist who expects the whole world to speak my language. The whole country stirs up some sort of emotion in me, which I’ve not had before with any other places I’ve wanted to visit/languages I’ve wanted to learn. That’s my driving force that keeps me going I guess.
And yes, I’d like to watch Bleach without the subs on… sue me :P
January 16, 2012 at 2:59 am #24475@Gigatron In my experience anime has a much higher percentage of annoying people in its fanbase. Just read some of the comments on Crunchyroll.
and seeing somebody use kawaii in romaji while mixing it in with English language makes me die inside. Wait, I just did it!
