I’ve been an on-and-off anime fan for 15 years now I think..? I haven’t followed any new series however… but I can say that it was the springboard for my fascination with Japanese culture.
I don’t look down at people who want to learn Japanese because of anime. I believe it’s still a big part of the culture and can be a good motivator – it depends on your passion for it. For me, it wasn’t enough.
What’s really motivated me, however, is manga. I read scanlations but it’s not enough. I want to be able to buy a copy of my favourite non-licenced manga from my local Kinokuniya and read it. It’s really compelling for me since a lot of good series aren’t licenced and I can never get a copy of it legally aside from the original Japanese.
Also, I hate waiting for scanlation updates!

California or New York?
Actually now that you mention it, as annoying as it seems, I respect people who want to take the effort to learn Japanese because of anime. My older sister, who has been watching anime for a big portion of her life, never occurred to her to take it upon herself to learn Japanese. And I would always think “Why not? if you like it THAT much, can’t you enjoy even more if you tried to learn Japanese?”. So like even though they are still mad annoying in Japanese classes, I would give them the least amount of credit for even thinking of learning Japanese. The rest though, like how they conduct themselves or how well they actually do in the language is another matter.

Sorry!

January 16, 2012 at 10:00 am #24488@Yggbert, fair enough, and I won’t lie, I also used to hate on “weeaboos” a lot in my youth (long before I even cared about Japan), and even now I still wouldn’t consider myself part of that “fandom”, as it were.
But honestly, I could say the same about sport fans. A lot of my mates are obsessed over sports to a comical degree and (personally) I find it more than a bit annoying how they carry on (sometimes it’s almost embarrassing). But, at the same time I can’t condemn them for it. I figure, “different strokes for different folks”.
While I won’t deny, “weeaboos” do come on strong, I gotta give them at least a little credit for being passionate about summat, which is more than I can say for myself, and they genuinely seem to enjoy themselves, so I really can’t fault them for it.
That’s just my own opinion, though. :)

January 26, 2012 at 10:38 am #25767I’ve decided to protest against the use of the word weeaboo! From now on any and all posts made by me(no matter how infrequent they may be) will end with the word DESU until the injustice against anime fans ends!
That is all desu~
(I feel dirty having written that…)

January 27, 2012 at 10:55 am #25862Oh, no warning, just a complete removal of Bbvoncrumb’s post, eh? :P
OT: @Ryuugyuu: There are “fans of anime” and then there are “weeaboos”, just like there are “fans of Star Trek” and “Trekkies”. Not all people who like anime/manga are weeaboos, but it’s certainly a defining characteristic of people who ARE like that. Would you prefer we call them “Wapanese”? :P
January 27, 2012 at 11:36 am #25875Of course not desu.
And whats wrong with trekkies :P I think trekkies are totally kawaii!
(I really cannot put into words just how much a hate typing like that)

January 28, 2012 at 2:01 am #25950Neeveeeer…otaku shall rule the world. First we’ll hit Japan and everyone will love us ’cause they all love anime and such, then we’ll take the rest nano-desu-nyaa~
(last time I promise you)
January 29, 2012 at 12:39 am #26002The first time I tried learning japanese was because of anime and, i kind of crashed and burned (when textfugu was still a baby). Then I picked it up again, because I thought it sounded pretty and I have no other hobbies. And I’m loving it! Some of my friends still don’t understand that I’m doing this as a hobby though and not to watch anime.
February 9, 2012 at 2:04 pm #26569I love Japanese entertainment–anime, manga, video games, music, movies, TV shows (can’t say for sure about the standup, though the routine is a lot funnier in other mediums). So it’s one reason why I’m learning Japanese. But it’s definitely not the only reason. I like the folklore, the history, the customs, the places, the food, the people, and I’d like to just kick back one day and have an average conversation with someone.
