4-5 is when it starts to get challenging.
がんばって!
February 10, 2014 at 7:23 am #43997I just finished season 2. Most of the grammar so far was repetition for me, since I already learned it before. However it’s always good to have a refresher and most of the vocab was new to me. Season 3 will probably be more difficult, but also more interesting because I will learn new things!
February 13, 2014 at 4:53 pm #44018Great to see people are still going at it!
I regretfully burned out a few months back, it’s moments like these I’m glad I got the lifetime membership. I will say this, although it’s been months since I did any in-depth study I find an incredible amount of the content I learned from the seasons (Up to season 6) is still retained in this noodle brain of mine. I’m immensely sluggish when compared to my former self when I had my daily pattern down but it just goes to show TF really works :)
Perhaps when the next TF update comes I’ll dive back in (Stop laughing! I know Koichi takes his time with the updates :P).
I obviously regret stopping my studies looking back now. So for anyone thinking of taking a breather…DON’T! I hope you folks continue :)
February 14, 2014 at 1:55 am #44024I would say start back again now, it will likely be another year or longer before the reboot.
You could start again from the beginning and finish it by that time…
February 14, 2014 at 6:10 am #44027It’s something I’m seriously considering. I can’t imagine it would be that difficult to catch up to where I was up to before. With the weekend coming up it would be a perfect time to jump-start again :) Getting into the learning pattern again however will take some practice. Going over Season 1 the “What excuses hold you back”, this had seriously made me re-evaluate a few things. I can’t use the classic, “I don’t have enough time”. The hard truth is I do, but I prioritize my time on other things instead of learning Japanese (Makes me a sad Panda).
You ever experience getting burned out Aikibujin when learning Japanese?
February 14, 2014 at 7:11 am #44028Is it possible that you hit the dip and it was too steep for you to get out of it at that time, Wasif Asif?

I believe so. It felt like I came a long way but looking back at my earlier posts I recall Kanji being the bane of my existence :) I’ll use this weekend to go over the earlier seasons, I’m confident I can play catch up pretty quickly.

Good luck.
February 15, 2014 at 7:36 am #44041You ever experience getting burned out Aikibujin when learning Japanese?
That would be an understatement. ^_^
I’ve been learning on and off for ten years now. Even after starting TextFugu I only got to Season 4, then I had nearly a year of not studying (I moved and went back to uni) before I began again from the start).
And I procrastinate like no one’s business.
So I’m talking my study a little easier, slowing the pace, but just making sure I stick with it.
So if Anki builds up too much, I don’t add anything until it comes under control again. If I get sick of studying something, I choose something different, or take a break. I’m just making sure that I’m always studying something and I don’t let myself stop again. And if I find that I have stopped without realizing it, I immediately get back in to something right away.
Just gotta keep on going, and stop saying it’s been too long since I last studied so I’ll wait for a “better time” to do it when I can really focus. As I think is quoted in TextFugu, the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now. ^_^
February 15, 2014 at 8:06 am #44042Guess I shouldn’t put myself down too much then. Thanks for sharing Aikibujin :D
I’m breezing through Season 1 since it covers the bear basics. I’m thinking of using Wanikani for my Kanji learning, something about the layout and the way it’s presented I find is great for learning Kanji instead of the Anki decks that I used previously.
I’ve also returned to Lang-8. Though I spend most of my time making corrections for folks from Japan looking to learn English. My hope is that I can make a few friends online who can help me with my own studies later down the line.
Ah it feels great to be back and learning again. *Cracks knuckles*, time to wrap up today’s Kanji :D

February 16, 2014 at 7:12 pm #44056Yeah I highly recommend WaniKani and Lang-8 to supplement TextFugu.

February 17, 2014 at 6:07 am #44061Season 1 was easy enough to breeze through and I’m almost done with Season 2, my weekend was fairly productive :)
WaniKani is a tad slow in terms of progression at the moment. I’m still level 1 despite getting my reviews correct but I’ve read that it starts off slow and the pace rapidly picks up. If that’s the case then I’ll wait and see for now.
Well work beckons me, I detest my job. I’ll keep you folks updated on my progress :D
February 17, 2014 at 6:36 am #44062I just recently started with Season 4 (with adjectives and stuff) and ugh, it’s going a bit rough, haha! I find it difficult to keep going, in terms of advancing towards more chapters. Just the first chapter is giving me a hard time in grasping what it says and it’s demotivating me to feel stuck like this. Previously I’ve measured my progress by how many chapters I did each week but I haven’t went onto chapter two even and it’s been more than a week now.
My streak is still going however! Been going through my Anki decks since I started studying the language, which is Nov 23 2013, so almost three months now. Though, it’s getting harder to tell myself to “get it over with” each day that passes by. Originally I could easily just go through my Anki decks whenever I came home from school, happened automatically really, but now I just procrastinate til’ I’m just about to head to bed towards the evening. Kind of terrifying to be honest, don’t wanna break my flawless streak!
Don’t know what to do about it to be honest. I wanna keep up so I can one day be able to chat with my Japanese speaking friends! (Can’t rely on Google Translate forever haha). Anyone who has had a similar experience like me who can perhaps give me a helping hand of any sort (advise, tips, something?).
February 17, 2014 at 9:06 am #44068Been there before, more than once!
In my earlier posts I mentioned burning out but I experienced something very similar to your situation as well. Season 4 was the first time that my progress stopped stone cold but between doing my Anki reviews and re-reading the chapters something eventually clicked and I was able to continue.
One thing I will say now is, don’t break the habit of reviewing your Anki and going through the chapters! When I thought to myself, “I’ll review my Anki tomorrow”, that eventually snowballed into me putting it off a week and before I knew it a month had passed. You end up second guessing your choices and spend more time thinking “I should do -X-” instead actually doing anything at all.
What exactly do you find about the adjectives that is giving you a hard time :)?
February 17, 2014 at 9:23 am #44069I’m alright with the grammar part, though I haven’t looked at it that much. It’s the words themselves are hard to grasp. They’re difficult, some sound similar to each other, with only a kana or two differing sometimes. Learning my first few verbs was the same experience. They take a really long time to differentiate between and get me on the edge to smashing my head in pavement really… (not not really but you know, frustrating as hell). I’m also really good at repeating past mistakes! For example, if I guess ‘x’ on a word that shows up in Anki, I sure as hell will guess the same exact thing the next time it comes up! Sometimes I even go out of my way to look up up the word/kanji on jisho.org, so that I’ll remember that I really struggle with this one when I see it the next time. Despite this, I still do it!! It’s stupid xD
One thing I try to do a lot (outside of TextFugu) is to use the things I’ve learned as much as I can whilst talking Japanese to native speakers. However, TextFugu’s Anki decks doesn’t like showing the kanji for the words I review either, not even on the side or anything, which bothers me because it gives me literally zero chance of recognizing it if I’d happen to read it elsewhere (like when chatting with my Japanese friends).
Learning words individually is far from my strongest method to understanding faster. Feels too abstract I suppose. I need more sentences to work with (wish there was more example sentences on practice pages!). Maybe even some beginner reading/listening comprehension of some sort so I can really nail the very basics, the most common things you hear and such and practice my pronunciation/speaking speed. I’m not too much of a fan of creating my own sentences, at least not when I don’t have a teacher/knowledgeable person to review my sentences. That way, it makes me uncomfortable about doing that… If they were to be incorrect, I would never know! At least never for absolute sure.
