I won’t blame it on the Anki instructions, which I’d call broken at this point, but others obviously overcame that hurdle, but it certainly was a factor.
I would. That’s why I wrote my own. :P ^_^
I didn’t have the same problems as when I started here we were still using Anki 1, but even then the instructions were still a little outdated, when I came back after a break and Anki 2 had been released, I knew I was going to have to figure out most of this stuff myself, and figured I’d share my findings, because the current instructions are horrendous.
As far as “regular learning content” goes: I loved it. I hated the Passion List, and still fear it, but that was all, I love the personal and up-beat feel of the lessons, and the presentation is great, down to the quotes, which feel very well picked, and they generally add to it rather than distract despite being mainly garnish. Otherwise there is only small stuff, such as writing the hiragana chart in a “cleaner” font, and so on.
In case you missed my response in the other thread I’ll repost it here, as others might benefit from it as well:
I ended up skipping the passions list as well, because it got too complicated. I wouldn’t worry about it.
There are occasional exercises that require the passions list, but you don’t really need to be passionate about your list.
So as an alternative it might be better to choose a place that you go to often, and make a list of the objects, adjectives, and verbs that would be used there and use that. Something like a movie theater or a restaurant. So even though you might not be passionate about it, it’s still extremely relevant.
^_^
New: Until today I was sadly unaware of the existence of the lesson index! Making this more visible in the lessons would be an improvement in my opinion. I’m well aware that Textfugu is currently being re-written, and I guess it’s going to improve a great deal so I’m not sure how helpful this still is, so I finish here and see how new Textfugu will be.
From what I’ve seen it looks like the new index system will be very good, as that’s one of the most common complaints since the site was created. In case anyone missed it:
March 12, 2014 at 1:13 pm #44402I love the Index on that. Maybe toning it down with the animations a little bit, making it cleaner and that should end up being pretty perfect.
Well, I’m happy that others share my pain, though failing to overcome problems is my personal failure in the end, even if factors other than myself constructed them. You obviously did better in that respect. On a sidenote: Just been through the “Negative Tense Nouns” and finishing up chapter 3 today. You don’t happen to know any good reading exercises, do you? Those sentences in the lessons give me weird issues, but that may also be connected to the fact that I tried to do 2 chapters per day – which may have been slightly too ambitious.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.March 14, 2014 at 9:21 pm #44434Season 3 donezo
Learned a few sentence enders I didn’t know and working on some verbs I didn’t know with Anki
Considering I got in for cheap TextFugu was actually worth the money just for keeping things simple. Easier to get motivated for me too to just load a website at work or something and read up than it is to whip out Genki
I’m also becoming an insomniac finishing WaniKani and Core 6K reviews :P
March 19, 2014 at 5:22 pm #44501WOOP! Just completed season 4 and it feels great! I have been using Textfugu since September, the same time I moved to Japan. Textfugu has proven to be a fantastic recourse in helping me to understand to a limited extent what is going on around me in this slightly crazy country. I just wanted to write this to say a huge thank you to the “baby throwing construction worker” Koichi and his spectacular team for working so hard to help self learners like myself. Now it’s time to jump into season five and try and crawl my way out of this “dip” :)

Wait you… MOVED TO JAPAN?! I want to move to Japan too… ;-; I’m jealous now
March 21, 2014 at 7:56 am #44524March 23, 2014 at 3:01 am #44545hello everyone.
finally i barely finished season 5. that took a long time. i am busy nowadays and read lessons much slower than before. still, i kept doing my anki homeworks everyday :)now i get less confused when I look at lang-8 japanese replies and corrections. not understanding much but at least i do not get headache when looking at japanese like before and can translate.
i am feeling much better at memorizing words in anki. a few lessons ago anki actually gave me less vocab to study than usual. the amount of new vocab increased per lesson so i am back to the same amount of words everyday but many of them are new words. i also do less repeated mistakes. before i used to forget a word by the time it comes again even in the same day. now i usually do a mistake only once or twice per day.
will start season 6 soon.
do your best everyone.
March 23, 2014 at 4:08 am #44546That’s great when you hit the Anki stride. Just keep it up, don’t stop!
March 23, 2014 at 8:52 pm #44560Finally finished Season 4! Woohoo! This is where I got stuck last time, so I feel very proud of myself. I think I’ll review a bit more before moving on to Season 5 just to make sure that I really got the hang of everything. Is that a good idea?
I did my first Lang-8 post and I’m scared of all the corrections that will surely fly my way. Keep it up everybody! :D
March 24, 2014 at 5:18 am #44566Certainly a good thing. You never want to rush your studies as that will cause you to become deficient in certain areas, which will result in a lack of confidence to continue, when you start to make mistakes that you shouldn’t be making.
So definitely a good idea to make sure you are solid before you continue on. Just don’t wait so long that you lose your momentum.
がんばって!
