I’ve secured a phone interview with Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions tomorrow. The position is development of courses/instructional material to teach customers and sales people how to use the products. Hopefully I get it and can weasel my way into translation at some point, or into some sort of position where I’ll be able to travel back and forth from here to Japan from time to time.

On another note, I though my Japanese might have been slipping. I (finally) bought the 上級へのとびら textbook. I thought it would be really tough but I’m blowing through it without difficulty. The only problem seems to be (as it always has been with me) vocabulary. I’m getting there though.

There was a video posted here a while back (may have even been on the old forum): it was a sketch/hidden-camera prank – from American TV I think – that had a guy in a restaurant who could understand Japanese, and he kept overhearing the Japanese chefs talking to the owner’s wife about having sex with her and insulting her husband, but because the owner couldn’t speak the language, he was completely oblivious. Does anyone know what show that was from or where I can find it? I’ve searched all different combinations of things but I can’t find it :(

Just got an email from JapanesePod101, and it said this:

“Learning 100 new Japanese words? Pretty good!
1,000 words? That’s close to conversational fluency!”

That’s the biggest load of garbage I’ve ever heard! While there are probably many different definitions of “conversational fluency”, “learning 1000 words” is not it in the slightest XD I’ve covered more than 3000 words through Core6k, and I can’t speak for shit… I like their podcasts, but this is pure marketing bullshit, just like “Master Japanese in 3 days!” or “A single mom from [location not found] discovered one weird tip for becoming instantly fluent in Japanese that the other sensei don’t want you to know! With real AcaiBerrySuperfood Technology (TM)! As featured in every newspaper and TV channel everywhere!”

Haha yeah I get those sometimes as well. It is pure BS, and 1000 words ain’t even close to conversational fluency lol. Even knowing 10 times as many words I would argue that you can’t say your are at a “conversational fluent level”, but more like at a pretty decent level where you’d understand most words in normal conversation.

The koohii forum is going down. This will be a hard thing to replace. I suggest if you go there often (for lists of audio blogs, downloads, or other resources) that you start grabbing what you can while it is still available. I don’t think anything like this forum is likely to self-generate, at least not anytime soon.
