I’m not sure if the grammar in that sentence is completely right (that’s not to say it’s wrong, I just don’t know) but the phrase 今の日本にある is modifying the noun ラーメン屋. 日本にある means “in Japan” so the whole shebang is “Ramen shops in (modern/current/today’s) Japan…” and is the topic of the sentence.

Not sure about の. I’ve had male students ask me questions with の…but they’re kids so…

Well, the の at the end of the sentence can be used in the place of か for asking a question…I have heard it fairly often in speech and in songs.

I met this Japanese guy on Facebook who’ll be coming to Edinburgh Uni for a year to study and he added me as a friend since I said I was wanting to take Japanese classes. So anyway, he messages me a few basic questions in Japanese and I reply as best I can.
He then replies “Goodness!! すごいよ!!日本語本当にうまいね!!seriously woooow!本当にびっくりしました!どこで習ったの??びっくりしましたーーー!!

    Michaelの日本語は本当に素晴らしいです!自信をもってください!

I try to correct your sentences even tough most of them are soooooooooooooo super perfect!!

[then he corrects my writing a little]

Seriously your Japanese is super great! it’s so impressive! Thank you!”

Wow, he really likes to compliment, doesn’t he :P What I wrote wasn’t even particularly complex, either. I guess that’s Japanese people for you :P

Michael – this is my response to your question in another thread of how studies are going. ;)

July kind of sucked for me. I had family here and then I was staying with family. Then I was buried in Anki because I didn’t study at all while I was away from home and barely touched it while they were here. So I spent the end of July catching up on Anki and reviewing. I was surprised my retention rate was pretty high on everything but RTK. I regret having pushed so hard on it and then falling so far behind. I’m not relearning RTK but I’m spending too much time on reviews. My fault.

So… now I’m spending roughly 90 minutes a day studying plus another few hours listening to Japanese podcasts while doing things around the house. Just today I downloaded a new podcast to try, one about cooking. Hopefully it’ll be good!

Studying – Anki reviews take about 30 minutes. I’m relearning katakana, staying up with all the vocab (some from TextFugu, some from Jpod101, and some from native materials), and (still) trying to catch up on RTK. Then I listen to a grammar lesson on Jpod101 and a culture lesson there as well. I take notes, practicing my handwriting, and then add a bunch of vocab and any available sentences into Anki.

I’m trying to move into using more native materials but I still feel overwhelmed. There is SO much that I don’t know and I find almost all native materials are over my head. I understand pieces here and there and those pieces are getting bigger daily. Yay for progress! Right now I’m watching a movie with no subs. I understand the basic plot but miss out on a bunch of context in the dialogue. That’s alright; progress is slow but steady.

How are things going for you? I hope people are studying over the summer. This thread has been quiet for awhile. ;)

If you want to watch a movie with no subtitles, I recommend ダリーンは外国人. It’s not so hard to follow and you can understand more and more each time you watch it. That and I really like that movie, I rewatched a part of it again today and almost cried at certain parts

Well, it’s good hear you’re finally getting back to it :)

Atm, I’m just finishing up adding the last of the Ultimate Adjectives to my “reverse” deck (yeah, I use two vocab decks and 2 RTK decks to review >..<]….

This post isn’t working, it’s deleted all that I’ve typed XD

    FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
This forum really doesn’t like what I have to say.
I’ll try again next time hehe

Also, through Koichi's advice, I "acquired" a book called "Kanzen Master (3 kyuu)"; it covers a whole bunch of grammar points from the old JLPT 3 level (+ a few old JLPT 4). Apart from as concise as possible an explanation of what the grammar point means, everything is Japanese (i.e. the example sentences). It's damn good being able to actually understand most of them, since they looked so daunting at first.

I also "acquired" a book called "All About Particles" – the romaji sucks, but the examples are also in full Japanese. Good explanations with that one. Really in-depth sometimes (13 pages on the uses of ?! haha). Also includes some usages that it considers more for an "intermediate/advanced" level – confusing but generally interesting.

Once the adjectives cards are out of the way, I'm gonna start with AJATT's My First Sentence Pack, which will be the start of sentence mining (I think I'm getting to that stage now, hopefully). That one was also "acquired", but only cause someone was cool enough to put it in the Shared Decks section of Anki, and nobody has reported it ;P

I had to copy this back in in stages, but it seems the last little bit just isn’t working.

    Done with Ultimate adjectives
    Done with Ultimate Nouns 1 & 2
    Done with Lessons
Finishing the last 3 groups of stroke 5 kanji and afterwards start the 6 stroke radicals
Finishing the last… 11ish groups of Ultimate verbs…

My 3 month anniversary to textfugu will be this 22nd :P

My current studying goal – to stay on top of my Anki reviews while staying at my brother’s house. I’m here until Monday night and I don’t have to fall 450 cards behind like last time! I may not get all of my studies done this weekend but I vow to stay on top of Anki.

    Anyone else studying?

@winterpromise31: You know it ;) Given up with AJATT’s My First Sentence Pack – too much casual stuff was confusing me like hell!! haha Now, I’ve decided to do Core 6000, which I’d totally forgot about until recently, and it has much easier sentences :D I think what I’m gonna do is, after reviewing a card and getting it right so many times, I’ll remove the example sentence from the answer field and put it in a separate deck (cause by that time, I probably won’t need an example to know how it’s used). That way, by the end of the whole Core 6000 thing, I should have a deck of 6000 sentences, more than halfway to AJATT’s “10,000 sentences” goal :D The best thing is though, since I’ve done TextFugu’s Ultimate Vocab lists, about 1/6 of the 6k list is already learned – much less daunting!! :D

And in other news… got about 10 cards so far in the last box over at kanji.koohii.com – while the site’s only giving me about 20 or so reviews a day right now, that’ll probably increase massively soon enough D: haha

Also, working my way through a book called “All About Particles” – it’s fantastic, but you just gotta ignore the romaji >.< Not enough Japanese grammar books are without romaji :(

    Good luck with Anki ;)

My summer vacation just finished so I am back to school :/ it is pretty damn hard to find any time to study Japanese along with all the other things I have to read. For the moment My goal is to finish S1 before the end of this month(1/3 of s1 remaining – I can do it!). For some reason my motivation is completly gone, and I havn’t been studying anything other than my anki/memrise :(

Even though I havn’t been studying Japanese, then I have watched a few documentaries about Japanese, and learned some more about Japanese culture :)

Keep up the good work everyone! :D

Michael, that’s an awesome idea about the Core6k goal and a sentence deck. I had forgotten all about the Core goals as well. Hmm… Keep us updated?

Weber – At least you’re staying up to date with Anki! That’s good progress right there. Do you listen to Japanese podcasts?

I’m still at my brother’s house but I’ve done a good job at keeping up with Anki. I am up to date with all Anki reviews. Woohoo! And I’ve even listened to a couple short jpod lessons. Tomorrow I return home so I’ll pick up the pace on the studying. I need to catch up to Koichi on Season 3.

Still tossing up if I should take the JLPT or wait until I have a better chance of passing N2.
