I’ve just started with hiragana for now. I’ve got my first anki deck loaded, and have been practicing on realkana. I have this app on my iPod called “Japanese Tracing: Hiragana” to help me learn stroke order. It’s an amazing little app and very helpful.
I have KeyHoleTV playing in the background most times, immersing myself in the sound of the Japanese language. Because I’m still learning the sounds/writing/reading, I don’t know if it’s working, but we’ll see. I do this at least one hour a day, and I’m blessed that my son is pretty good during this time.
I’m taking my time with this, and I’m already happy that I can read some already – I even recognize a few words. Whenever I see Kanji, I get frustrated, but that makes me determined to learn even more.
September 9, 2011 at 6:55 pm #17161KeyHolyTV is pretty cool but the quality is terrible, N’Donna. You should use the streaming radio stations on TuneIn Radio. There’s always something on there, http://tunein.com/radio/Japan-r101255/
I definitely suggest Ban Ban Radio, Sea Wave, and Osumi FM. Sometimes the main website for TuneIn is picky and it might not work, but you can get all the streaming files from here, http://www.simulradio.jp/ It’s all in Japanese but you can easily go by the logo thumbnails.

September 9, 2011 at 8:12 pm #17166The quality never bothered me too much. I think this is because of the ever-changing nature of a toddler, and how at any moment, I have to get up, crying out “No, son, don’t do that!” So, I’ve mostly been listening with a few peeks here and there. A lot of DVD releases of US shows – how odd.
But, I will try out these radio stations. Thank you!
September 9, 2011 at 10:05 pm #17169Today, I would like to talk about a wonderful experience.
I went to the our university’s first JSA meeting. After the meeting (which was really boring because most of it was someone trying to get people into their program in helping people in Africa and a South American country), I stuck with a friend who is taking Asian studies and is learning Japanese.
Long story short, I met some new Japanese friends and spoke Japanese to them almost all the time. And it didnt even occur to me that it was the first for me speaking to a Japanese person in person until I reached my room. A wonderful day.
It doesnt even matter if I didn’t submit my assignments today.September 10, 2011 at 10:09 am #17173I feel rather good about myself when I realize that a week ago I wasn’t able to recognize most hiragana characters, now I can write them all out from memory. The weird thing is that I’m better at writing them than reading.
I’m also almost done with Season 1. It was mostly stuff I already knew or, as Koichi keeps saying, “knew but didn’t know about it”. But still, I learned something new, some vocab (vocab is always good), and noticed that I’ve never been so happy to learn something before as I am now, learning Japnese. Perhaps I will feel less sure about it when it comes to harder stuff, but I’ll enjoy this while it lasts :p
So looking forward to starting Season 2.
September 11, 2011 at 10:17 am #17177I did the drag and drop hiragana today for the first forty-six hiragana. I managed to do it in one minute forty seconds (yay). I feel confident that I can recognize most hiragana, now it’s time to work on the dakuten.
I’m using the app Japanese Tracing: Hiragana to help with stroke order. It’s lovely.
So glad I got the forever account. I just love it. I’m learning a lot, and it should be interesting to see how things go once I enter an University Japanese class.
September 11, 2011 at 9:00 pm #17187September 12, 2011 at 10:35 am #17203And so I have finished Season 1. I feel proud of myself and so looking forward to learn more.
September 12, 2011 at 10:17 pm #17237September 13, 2011 at 6:12 am #17241I started on the Dakuten yesterday, and it was very easy. I can remember what sounds they change into, including the H-row. I will practice on Real Kana before class today.
And I went to listen to some Japanese radio stations to immerse myself, and picked one playing old school R&B music from the States. My little heart soared LOL

September 14, 2011 at 4:59 am #17294After finishing Season 1 yesterday evening, I want to become a little more active here…
As for studying, Katakana it is for today. xD
September 18, 2011 at 12:32 pm #17404I got a lesson down today(0.o verbs) and 5 kanji.
I finally got around to upgrading everything to the new decks so it is much easier to keep track of :D The new decks also have some nice features like asking about which radicals are in the kanji
Anyway, this is what came out of it http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5223862/1h%2015.PNG733 cards reviewed in 1.15h
Did it take just as long time for you guys?September 19, 2011 at 2:58 am #17415I feel kinda mad at myself for not having studied anything for the past few days and neglecting to do my Anki reviews… granted it’s because my gums got infected, half my face is swollen (I look like a hamster) and I’m in almost constant pain, still. I can’t bring myself to do anything that requires me to put my brain to work. Well. Except playing Portal for like 15 minutes a day, that is.
