Milestone: 2006 sentences under active review, covering 600 kanji.
I also just finished my second children’s book, 鬼の毛三本. This one is written using some kanji, but it has furigana. There is lots of repetition in the story, so it is easy to understand.
Next up is ラプンシェル.
So I decided to get rid of the Anki deck I’ve using all thorough RtK (kanji -> keyword). It was good, of course, but I started to feel that it’s only teaching me how to write kanji while I’m now focusing my attention on learning how to READ kanji (and it sure did teach me to write kanji – no Japanese character will be a bunch of squiggles to me again), plus I got way too many cards overdue and doing the reviews was very boring. Not sure if it’s a good idea, but eh, whatever.
I’m now going through a new RtK deck, kanji -> keyword this time, and following Elenkis’ advice, I started Core 2k – found it very enjoyable, although I kept getting annoyed at the fact I could remember what some kanji mean but now how to read them ^-^Mark Weber: Maybe something like

I figure if you put the adjective before the noun it just becomes like a nice simple “The woman ate 2 burgers”I found out about japaneseclass.jp from another thread and signed up for it last night. I’ve already completed tests for lessons one and two on level one. I received a perfect score for lesson two, but I missed three questions on lesson one. Why? Because they were in Katakana, which I haven’t reached in textfugu yet.
Oi.
Time to finish three-stroke kanji and the last chapter in season two so I can start to enjoy some katakana goodness.
Also, encountering “二つ” on some random Japanese page last night (probably lang-8 because I’ve been on there a lot lately” and having a good idea of what it meant made me smile. I’m starting to recognize some kanji!
I finished ラプンシェル, and it was much more difficult than 鬼の毛三本. Luckily it stayed fairly close translation to Grimm’s original version, so I could look at an English translation and get unstuck. There are still some parts that I don’t quite get, but I have decided just to move on rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure them out. Maybe some day I will come back and read it again.
Next up is こぞっこまだだが.
Despite my not having much time to study now, I ordered a Japanese magazine with some interviews in it, and am proud to say I can understand a LOT of what is being said. :D (though still have to look up many words, but still) It was a definite motivator for me, so yay. I’ll probably study that for a while.. y’know, keepin’ it fresh and all of that mess.
I finished こぞっこまだだが, with some help from Elenkis and MisterM2402. Next up is こなひきのおやこ と ろば。 It’s another translation from German, and it is written in all hiragana.
I met up with a Japanese guy I met on Facebook, tonight – he’s over here in Edinburgh studying linguistics and I started talking to him online a few months ago. Tonight’s been the first time we weren’t both busy haha
Oh my god, it was embarrassing how bad I was XD He was trying to explain things to me in Japanese, and I just wasn’t following >.< I felt really bad about it, but he kept saying「大丈夫、大丈夫！」. It was interesting at least, but really frustrating having to speak in English the majority of the time because I didn't know how to say it in Japanese :( And it was embarrassing having him sitting there for 5 minutes while I umm'd and uhh'd and didn't even get the answer in the end XD He says he doesn't mind doing it for like 30mins – 1hour but he agreed that if we were doing it like that all day, it would get too much :P
He explained that he thought the best way for me to learn was for him to speak all in Japanese, and while I know that's true, it sounds way too difficult XD Even though I can help him with stuff in English, I feel bad because I need a lot more help than he does :P
We're both really busy however, so I don't think we'll get to see each other much. I'm looking forward to the next meeting but I'm dreading it at the same time XD
@Mister; oh god, you’re brave. I would melt into a puddle of nothingness. :X It’s nice that you found someone with the patience to work with you though, haha. :]

Michael – I’m envious and admiring your bravery at the same time. ;) lol. I have no speaking practice and I’d probably be sitting there ummming and such too. I hope you get another practice session! The next one will probably be better simply because you got the first try out of the way.
I’ve spent this holiday weekend (it’s Canadian Thanksgiving tomorrow) learning Katakana. I’m up to the T-row, and realkana.com has been a great help.
For some reason, I’ve been watching videos of “Panel de Pon” (パネルでポン) all weekend. Maybe I just want to play the game. But what is also interesting is its use of hiragana and katakana. I find myself reading and recognizing words, which in turn helps with my reading speed. I can’t read all the kanji, but lucky, it doesn’t use all that much. Even the North American version, Tetris Attack, features of the names of all who made the game in both English and Kana – I found that to be so adorable.
I still have a ways with Katakana, but I’m sure that won’t take too long. I wish I could improve my speaking skills, but I suppose I’m content with learning the basics for now. At least my writing will be halfway decent. I’m pretty sure that at this rate, I might even be able to test out of the basic japanese course at the college I wish to attend, and either get into the accelerated first year course, which is only one semester and then you move on to Intermediate Japanese 1, or maybe even Intermediate Japanese itself. We’ll see.
I finished こなひきのおやことろば, and now I’m reading a book called 愛は死よりも, which is an adaptation of a story by Lafcadio Hearn. It has a lot more text than the other books I have read so far.
@missingno15: I’d rather not tell you, if that’s ok. It seems a bit… wrong to do that, you know? Respect for his privacy, ‘n’ all that haha.
@winterpromise31: I didn’t realise how intense it would be! XD My brain was well and truly fried afterwards… Speaking to my Japanese teacher is almost as big an ordeal, but she knows how to deal with people like me :P
