I’m working on the verbs – after an intense study weekend (I can’t stand writing critiques. If it were up to me, everyone would have four stars). I hope to have a good grasp of it by the end of the week. Download the Anki Sentence decks which are very nice. I’m working hard to work through the dip.
October 21, 2011 at 4:35 am #19564I feel that I’ve reached the dreaded “dip” now, honestly. Or rather, I suck and I know it :p While I know I’ve made progress, it feels like I haven’t done anything at all. I also get this nagging feeling that I’m doing something wrong I always get when learning something new. But I guess if I keep my daily routine, I’ll HAVE to get better eventually. 15/20 new words a day + one Fugu lesson if I can manage it. Paying more attention to the vocab for now. Grammar is important, but useless if I don’t have the vocab to use it with, ain’t it right?
October 21, 2011 at 5:51 am #19567Finished the last “real” Chapter of season 2 last night. Going to do some of my own review today via Anki and some handwriting (I really like handwriting). Perhaps maybe treat myself to an episode of un-subbed anime to see how much I can pick up (because that is fun for me).
I shall tackle the review chapter tomorrow! I’m feeling pretty good about this :D
October 21, 2011 at 2:47 pm #19602Currently on Season 01. Just finished up to the main hiragana pronunciation page, only the two pages left until I’m done with chapter 03, which I will continue off on tomorrow after letting the magic R sound seep in a bit more (and, admittedly, killing off some Nazi zombies). From the looks of the chapter 04 extras, I’ll begin writing/reading the hiragana and working with Aniki tomorrow too! Excited? Fosho.
October 21, 2011 at 2:59 pm #19605Finished the last chapter of season 4!!!
Now All there is left is reviews of everything and doing the parts i skipped over during the last 2chapters… (5stroke radicals and writing on lang8)October 22, 2011 at 11:01 am #19636Finished up everything from season 4, and did a lang-8 journal today. I got 5 feedbacks 0.o
I have reached my goal, and now all there is left is reviewing, and more reviewing :/ The season 2(4) all deck is just over 700 cards, so it will take a few days before I have gone through all of them :)October 22, 2011 at 12:11 pm #19640I sent off my university application for Japanese Studies / Japanese with Computer Science on Wednesday, pretty worried about getting in but if I don’t I’ll just have to do a lower level course for 9 months then re-apply next year, so it’s not all bad!
and I got back from New York, so right now I am doing lots of reviewing as I didn’t have much time to use Anki when I was away, going to start S5 soon!
October 22, 2011 at 4:46 pm #19648I finally finished 虔十公園林. It was difficult, and I had to track down an English translation in order to understand parts of it. It ended up being a good story though.
Next up is 樹のおつげ. It has furigana on only certain words, so it will probably be more work to look things up.
I also started reading Breaking into Japanese Literature, and I finished the first two stories. Because it has a mini dictionary on each page, you don’t have to be sitting at the computer in order to read it.
October 23, 2011 at 2:40 am #19654Breaking into Japanese Literature is great. I’ve only read the first story as I had other projects going on at the same time, but the imagery of the Japanese is quite beautiful (though perhaps a little morbid). Like:
すると、黒い瞳のなかに鮮やかに見えた自分の姿が、ぼうっと崩れて来た。 静かな水が動いて写る影を乱したように、流れ出したと思ったら、女の眼がぱちりと閉じた。 長い睫の間から涙が頬へ垂れた。

October 24, 2011 at 8:10 am #19704Today I did the lesson for casual nouns, and wrote a lang-8 entry. I am really impressed with what feedback I get on lang-8, everyone are so nice and today someone even offered me to send 天空の城ラピュタ all the way to me here in Denmark(I refused to have it send, it would cost more to send it than it would for me to buy a new one!). I don’t know if that is how polite all Japanese people are, but I have had a great experience, and have already made quite a few friends there :)
My motivation is very good at the moment, and I am learning faster than ever :D
Only thing that keeps letting me down is how little I can use 1,2,3,4 & 5 stroke kanji :/ only good ones are: 分かる、本、日本,久しぶり。
Looking forward to learn more!October 24, 2011 at 9:25 am #19712Still on hiragana, making use of Anki, the provided worksheets, and Realkana. I have the first 30 down pretty well in terms of writing and recognizing (of course still reviewing them just to make sure they stick). Going to continue on at this pace and hopefully get to the gritty stuff soon.
October 24, 2011 at 5:03 pm #19752I have fallen out of studying so bad. I really need to get back into it. Winter is coming and my international driver’s licence expired. I guess I’ll have lots of time. I’m doing a lightning round re-run of RTK with the supplement added in. Also next month I’m going to start meeting with a tutor at the international center in the city. Hopefully that spurs me on to speaking some more.
October 25, 2011 at 12:53 am #19769Yo Mark, why are you down about them Kanji?
Realize how awesome it is what you can already do! Keep Hwaitiiing!I just finished my first run of RTK (took a year, lolz)^^
October 25, 2011 at 1:24 am #19770Because there are so many kanji that I don’t understand, and the ones I do know don’t seem to be very common :(
Well I still only know a little over 100 kanji, so I shouldn’t expect more, but it is just frustrating not to understand what is written, when you do actually understand the words, but don’t know the kanji.October 29, 2011 at 5:21 am #19951Season 01 is done and done. Commemorative screenshot of the results of my studying this season:
http://oi41.tinypic.com/25pkdxd.pngTook notes in Evernote, but also used SAI to do writing practice just so that I could get accustomed to actually writing stuff out. And now onward to season 02.
