@Mister – Awesome. My boyfriend and I have a SNES with about 60 games, we clipped the tabs so it can play Super Famicom ones, although all we have right now is 星のカービイ:スーパーデラックス, Kirby Super Star in the US.One of the reasons why I am learning, for the media!
Been making myself write sentences with all the verbs to help me memorize them. Seems to be working.
November 23, 2011 at 5:53 pm #21253@larisajane: Yeah, I’ve heard about the clipping thing, but is there not some chip inside the machine that keeps it region locked? Doesn’t clipping those tabs just allow the cartridge to fit in the slot? Are there not some other modifications you need? Wonder if a Super Famicom could be modded to play British SNES games too :P
Always thought about buying a SNES (and an N64) but, while they’re *relatively* cheap, I still can’t really “afford” to spend that much on them, if you know what I mean. Got a lot of good memories of the N64 :) Basically, once I’m making the megabucks, I’ll set aside a room in my house/mansion for collecting lots of old consoles and games. Gonna be sweet B-)
Maybe have a “Zelda room” too…- This reply was modified 13 years ago by MisterM2402 [Michael].
November 23, 2011 at 9:25 pm #21256Nope cartridges aren’t region coded, you just have to remove the tabs so the Famicom cartridge fits in the SNES slot. I don’t think Nintedo games are coded until the gamecube, and all the handhelds are region free. :)
November 24, 2011 at 3:55 am #21263The 3DS isn’t region free which is incredibly stupid and annoying. The upcoming Vita will be region free, though. I’m looking forward to importing the Japanese version of Persona 4: The Golden ever so much.
November 24, 2011 at 1:24 pm #21286Region encoding is just stupid. Surely opening up your market to THE WHOLE WORLD is a better idea than keeping it confined, no?
November 25, 2011 at 12:30 pm #21302Question: do you have any advice for remembering the words for “days of the months/number of days”? (such as 一日、八日、二十日) I normally remember problematic words after reviewing them enough, but those keep giving me trouble and it’s been some time since I first saw them in Anki… bleh.
November 25, 2011 at 1:11 pm #21304@Michael you’d think that, but I see it as the corporate fat cats want the Aussies and those in other areas where games are really pricey to pay the full amount there, rather than being able to easily import them from elsewhere for cheaper, earning them less money. I’m pretty impressed that Sony have kept the 100% region free (for games) attitude across the PSP, PS3 and now the Vita. Kudos!
November 25, 2011 at 1:24 pm #21305well just remember that 日 is か
Add the kunyomi to that and you have the day ^^With months just remember 月 is がつ
add the onyomi to that and you have the monthDoes not work with all dates.

November 25, 2011 at 3:18 pm #21307@Mark: Yeah, that doesn’t really work with “tsuitachi” OR “ichinichi” :P
November 25, 2011 at 3:36 pm #21310Yeah that doesn’t work for many dates at all. Exceptions all over the place.
November 25, 2011 at 3:50 pm #21313That is why I put “Does not work with all dates”
Simply didn’t bother to write out exceptions ^^
Still worth to keep this “rule” in mind if you ask me.November 25, 2011 at 4:07 pm #21316Hmm I don’t think you can really apply a rule to it, but you can remember that once you get past 10 it will almost always end with にち
1 ends with たち
11-13 end with にち
15-19 end with にち
21-23 end with にち
25-31 end with にちEverything else ends with か.
November 25, 2011 at 5:16 pm #21321A couple of notable exceptions after 10 are the 20th (はつか)and 14th/24th (じゅうよっか and にじゅうよっか). And when you’re talking about a number of days, instead of just dates, the X4th rule applies as well (for 34 days, 44 days, 54 days, etc.).
Basically, there aren’t any real “rules of thumb” to follow when it comes to dates, bellow 10 at least. It’s like the whole “i before e except after c” thing – there are more words that go against this rule than follow it.
