I just tested myself on an RTK1 kanji in my Anki deck. Marked that kanji easy and now won’t see it again for 2.7 years. I remember when I was impressed that I wouldn’t see a card again for 1 year. Making progress!

@winterpromise: Next time you see that card, you’ll be at least semi-fluent, right? ;D I’d actually imagine that you’d wanna stop reviewing that deck before 2.7 years are up – you’ll be at a stage where you won’t need it any more long before then, I think :) Just out of curiosity, which kanji was it? It’s coming up for a year since I finished the main body of RTK now (minus the supplement), and I’ve *still* not go every card in the last box on koohii XD I finished on my birthday last year, and it’s my birthday on Friday – 2 things to celebrate I guess :P

OT: I watched an episode of The Simpsons in Japanese over on ニコニコ動画, and while I can’t understand 98.742% of it, because the show uses a lot of visual comedy (and I can remember the gist from watching it in English) it was still pretty good :D Bart and Lisa’s voice actors sound pretty close to the English ones :)

Also, I’m about halfway through Japanese for Busy People III and have 926 “fresh” cards to review in the Core 2000 deck on Anki :D Will still be a while before I make it on to Harry Potter, but I’m getting there :)

I live in Otaru, in hokkaido. Everyday, we get the news paper, twice, actually. I am learning kanji, some are not found in the textfugu kanji section, even some, 4 or 5 stroke kanji’s. I found this website very helpful, although, i believe some kanji’s are missing from here as well, it is a bit more complete.

Finished Core1000! XD I hope to go through next two by… June/July.

Finished step 1/10 in Core 2k today ^^
I had no clue that Core1k excited lol. The format is pretty good, and it is good for getting good to listening as well as sentence structure. I will do the entire Core2k deck, but I haven’t yet set a time when I would like to be done. Progress has been decent, but exams will come up soon enough, so I might have to cut down on Japanese :(

    Congrats!
Yeah, I don’t think there is Core1k shared deck. I study at iKnow site, they have each step separated there. I am also very satisfied with these sentences, so I’ll keep going until I hit Core6k :) Or find something better.
Don’t worry about cutting down, as long as you don’t stop studying all together. When I just started I was doing only 5 sentences/day. Any number is fine!

I am currently doing 100~150 a day, mostly because most sentences are basic, and I know most of the words in advance. I will however start getting in trouble once the reviews start catching up(I remember how it all of a sudden turned in to a pain to review RTK). Actually I find the format fun to do, and yeah… When having less than 2k vocab you shouldn’t really focus on anything aside from learning words. So I guess it is good that the sentences are short like まだ学校へ行くには早い時間です. I would however like to see compound sentences every now and again.
Did the sentence difficulty change the higher you got in Core?
How do you like the Core website, I never even checked it out because the quality of the Core2k deck is supreme ^^

Good luck with future studying :P I guess you will reach 2k before me!

“Did the sentence difficulty change the higher you got in Core?”

Not really. The sentences in the core 6k are all pretty basic gramatically, though some are slightly more tricky than others.

    lol missing

Mark, I don’t actually study on Core website, I expressed myself badly. I just use it as a source for my own decks. If someone is looking to study sentences I wouldn’t recommend them to study there. If you just want to learn vocab it’s okay site, but you can do that just as good with Core deck.

    #27108

@Hattori: Hey, I’m around the 1k mark as well :) Though my ordering is different, I think.

Some of the Core xK sentences are just terrible. Quite a few I’ve seen are just 「彼は[vocab]です」or 「彼はとても[vocab]ですね」 or 「[vocab]が大好きです」, which is pretty pointless haha. Not great examples of the words in question.
I just add new words once my reviews drop down a bit. I don’t do x per day or x per week, just whenever I feel I’m able.
One thing I don’t like about the Core deck/s is the amount of business-/politics-related words. I don’t think I’m at the stage where I’ll actually need to know them. I just learn them anyway, I guess, but I think I’ll need to filter a lot of the 6k deck for usefulness (I’ve heard there is a lot of guff in there).

One year ago today/yesterday, February the 24th, I finished the main body of RTK 1 (minus the supplement kanji). These are my stats on koohii now :) Feels weird thinking how long ago it was…

Pretty much all of the words in the Core 6k are really quite common in native Japanese material, as far as I’ve got to at around 4700 anyway. You may dismiss the more business based ones now, but I think you’d be surprised how often I see them. It’s not like they’re specialist words or anything, it’s stuff that comes up all the time (though some less than others of course).

The problem is that in the original Core order they throw a bunch of the business words at you all at once at around step 3/4 and then it gets much easier again after that. That was fixed when they reordered the course, but as far as I know there aren’t any Anki decks based on the new order.

Anyway, you’re probably going to want to know every word that’s in the Core 6k. So you might as well learn them :)
