Surely the best guide on how to sound like a native is *listening* to natives themselves, right? And why does it matter whether or not you pronounce like a native? Having a bit of an accent makes you more interesting (at least it does in English, I find). Obviously, if you’re unintelligble that’s no good, but a reasonable pronunciation should come without studying textbooks on it.

がんばってくださいね。missingさんへのビデオメッセージを見たい^^May 25, 2012 at 6:39 pm #31159@missingno15: Yup, as long as I don’t have a strong accent, I’m cool with that. A decent level of pronunciation will come in time, I’m sure, but I doubt I’ll ever “pass as a native”. It’s not like I’ll end up like 「外国ジム」 from not reading the book :P (http://youtu.be/sb5PZ6TXZXI)
OT: Finished Core 2000 today! :D I started near the end of last Summer, but have only been going a decent pace since the start of the year, which is why it’s taken so long. Now on to the other 4000…
May 25, 2012 at 11:19 pm #31162About to begin Season 3, Chapter 7, Doing Something (Part 1). Starting to notice the pace really picking up now. Lots of Kanji, vocab and sentences to review each day :)
May 28, 2012 at 8:45 pm #31239May 28, 2012 at 11:48 pm #31242@kanjiman – Know you what you mean! Up to season 4, the quantity of kanji is increasing!

Love learning Kanji. I’m currently learning the verbs. I can remember 11 so far from the first verb list. Need to remember the other 11 and then the next list.May 31, 2012 at 8:09 am #31300I finished reading all 70 issues of Mangajin. I bought the set on eBay a few months ago after Elenkis recommended it. Overall I would say it was a fun, relatively easy way to get more Japanese time in each day. If you have something like this around, there is never any reason you can’t do some reading. Everything you need to understand the Japanese is right there on the page. It’s too bad it’s out of print.
Next up: more Bakuman. Bakuman has full furigana coverage, and it is available in English. So you can put together an experience similar to Mangajin by putting the Japanese version on top of the English version and sliding it a bit when you get stuck on something.
June 2, 2012 at 8:41 pm #31364June 3, 2012 at 2:46 pm #31369Memorised all of the verbs from Season 3, Chapter 7. Now memorising the remaining ones from the next chapter. After that’s it’s sentence enders in the last chapter of Season 3 and then onto Season 4.
I’m wondering if I can finish Season 4 before the new update kicks in.
June 4, 2012 at 10:55 pm #31407I sort of jumped back into JP learning. I’m now through 1166 of 2200 RtK and am beating myself up that I didn’t do this immediately after hiragana/katakana. My mind feels open to Japanese unlike ever before. I look forward to completing this and being immersed in “real” Japanese from then on. Regardless of the diverse opinions of Heisig’s track, once it’s done it’s done. Then the chips can fall where they will.
Meanwhile, I am lagging behind with the more complicated grammar aspects of the language and must allow time to dig into this with redoubled efforts. I suppose I’ve continuously allowed rote memorization of vocabulary take precedence over getting down and dirty with grammar. In this regard I want to go through Textfugu (holding out for ver. 3 at just this moment, I suppose), Tae Kim and some books I’ve been neglecting, while taking copious notes.
So I’ll try posting more often. xD Best luck to all of us.

Just wrote about V3 on another thread. I think you should just keep going through TF and when the new update kicks in all well and good. I wouldn’t recommend delaying your studies for V3. It won’t mess up what you’ve done already.June 5, 2012 at 2:53 am #31416Congrats with finishing core 2k Michael, I am still only at around 1500, but I started a little less than 3 months ago :/ Looking forward to being done with it, and moving on to yet more vocab :D 15 words a day is hard to maintain, but I will keep on until I reach the 2000, then I will wait for my reviews to drop at least below 200 a day.
Less than a month for JLPT 4級 :3 -
