Gigatron – why do you feel like you have to do things in a certain order? If the idea of kanji makes you cringe, ignore it for now. You can come back to it in a little while. Study some vocab and grammar, have fun with Japanese for awhile, and then add it in slowly. Don’t study what you dread. Have fun first and maybe kanji will be fun later.

I’d be more motivated to do vocab instead, but I don’t want to risk doing things “out of order” and then make things harder for myself in the long run…You just need to get back on the horse. Hemming and hawing over the best way is not helping. You’re just spinning wheels. Do what’s motivating/interesting, not what’s “correct”. You’re doing nothing now, the “wrong” way is better than no way.

TL;DR:
Are you learning Japanese the wrong way? Don’t sweat it. Just keep moving.
June 18, 2012 at 6:41 am #31975Lang-8 CEO tweeted my journal on twitter today lol xD

I hate how all the people who started TF after me keep overtaking in regard to skill :P I’m just not studying enough, I guess… I planned to do at *least* 1 hour of Japanese per day over the Summer (and maybe look into another language too), and while I still do reviews/add new vocab, it hasn’t really taken off yet >.< I'm such a lazy git.
As for RTK, the BEST part about it is when you tell a native you know 2200 kanji and their heads just explode! :D And then you tell them you've only been learning for a year and their heads implode and explode at the same time, ripping a hole in the space-time continuum.
June 18, 2012 at 9:57 pm #31993That’s awesome, Mark. :D
Today – reviewed 16 minutes of Anki, read two blog posts in Japanese, and listened to an Intermediate Jpod101 lesson I downloaded ages ago.

Just gonna put it out there, I’ll fkn destroy anyone who says they “know” 2000 Kanji when they can recognize a kanji = an english word (Not even necessarily an accurate meaning).
I finished RTK and go through picking up vocab and grammar as I come across it, and I had a friend (More acquaintance, since hes a phaggot) who also did RTK talk to me the other day and asked the forever obnoxious and holdsnoweight question “How many Kanji do you know”. I replied honestly and said about 900-1100. He goes “Haha, I know 2200, and I started way earlier than you”. Apart from being retarded, if I had asked him to read a sentence he wouldn’t “Know” shit.
Next to putting Japanese in the middle of English sentences/words equating RTK with “Know all these Kanji” are my biggest pet peeves.

And people who are into idols also get exclusive help (to some extent) from me :D I’ve also been (half) helping him out too for the past few to several months too. And he has an amazing work ethic, reviews like 500 items a day and adds 20 new words a day too. All while getting fished by みるき on Google+ and balancing school. Unlike me where I usually seem to be sleeping for like half of the day LOL.

Looking at my entries from April my have become twice the length during that time lol. The main reason for this was mainly that I realized that I had to study harder if I wanted to pass JLPT4. Also around that time I started casually following idols (only watching like AKBingo once a week). This has then later developed in to watching I guess 30-1h of TV-shows every day and reading a lot on AKBmatome, 2ch & google+. This has been a good motivation towards learning, and it seems like even though I am still a beginner at Japanese at least it has payed off to some extent.
My exams have finished now, so pretty much my entire day is dedicated to Japanese, if it isn’t studying my damn 500-800 daily reviews then since I am following AKB there is plenty of things out there to both read and watch :D
What Missing is saying is true, idols have been a help, and I don’t even know where I found my motivation to study Japanese earlier because I didn’t use it for anything lol. As for Missing’s help, well we chat a lot together each day, and every once in a while I have a question that I can’t find an answer for anywhere on the web.
Get in to AKB, and you will be exposed to a few hours of Japanese daily^^
These are programs I watch every week, and besides these there are a lot of programs I don’t always follow but do watch quite a lot :)

Congrats. How long have you been studying Japanese for?OT
About to begin memorising い adjectives. I’ve also just passed the first 50 kanji mark here on TF. I feel like it’s going a bit slow so I may learn start learning 5 a day from now on. I think 5 a day is managable but if I start to get overwhelmed I can reduce it.June 19, 2012 at 6:31 am #32013ehh according to the forums 320 days ^^ But that shouldn’t really matter. Every person study at a different pace, and have different amount of time to dedicate towards learning.
I started out slow and it took me 1 month just to learn hiragana :pJune 19, 2012 at 6:49 am #32016Ah, so getting near to a year then. I properly got back into studying three months ago and feel I’ve made good progress in terms of grammar and vocab. However, I think 50 kanji in three months isn’t enough and want to increase the rate.
June 19, 2012 at 2:20 pm #32032Mark that’s badass! I think it might be a good idea to add a small journal entry into my rotation every day. So RTK, Core6K, Grammar, light reading and then a journal. I’m still early on in refreshing myself with anki so I don’t think it would be too much for a short entry.
June 20, 2012 at 7:40 pm #32065I have a policy of not adding new words until I finish reviewing all the previous items that I added beforehand in Anki. I finally finished reviewing them today because I’m am VERY lax with Anki so I was able to add 20 more items (=10 words). Gonna words like 海底、石油、建設、中年、お門違い、荷造り. I am gonna have to revise this “policy” of mine :/
And now I will go and eat.
June 20, 2012 at 8:04 pm #32066Would it be terribly unacceptable to do Lang-8 entries in “informal” Japanese?
I haven’t touched Lang-8 since last year, and I’ve been getting a small itch to maybe dust it off and write summat, but I’m still just so very naff at “polite” Japanese. I’d feel more comfortable writing in slangy relaxed speech because that’s how I talk.
I’d like to get that way of speaking/writing somewhat “mastered” before I delve into how to transform that into polite speech, but I also don’t want to come off as a total rude arrogant idiot to anyone that might read it.
