I have 3 steps left of Core2k on iKnow now, so I should finish it in about a week. I also finished my essay (English) and watched Die Hard and Die Hard 2, those count as studying, right?!

Die Hard 1 and 2 are classics. The third was ok but not on the same level as the first two. I’ve got around 20 い adjectives to memorise before moving on to the next chapter here on TF.

I watched the third today and rather liked it, I don’t like 4 very much because Justin Long is just too annoying. I did another 30 words for Core2k and went through the まで and ながら particles properly. I wanted to do more but I’m so tired, also the section in this book for に and が is freaking gigantic.

Don’t get me wrong, Die Hard 3 is a good film and worth watching, but it lacked that certain something the first two had. I’ll get round to watching the first three again someday and possibly number 4. Although number 4 doesn’t really interest me that much.

Now this is a story all about how
My life got flipped turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there,
I’ll tell you how I became incredibly distraught this weekend and didn’t study a bit. Now I’m over 500 hundred cards in the hole and behind in my grammar study as well. It’s going to be a long day, but I feel like I know the stuff pretty well so the reviews shouldn’t be so bad. I’m also trying to get back into lang-8 again. Unfortunately, even in English, when writing, I have the tendency to never be satisfied and constantly revise what I’ve written. In school, I got around this by never rereading what I wrote because if I did, I’d get sucked into a never ending cycle of revision. My Japanese isn’t good enough yet to do that, so I spend a lot of time trying to fix little things.

That intro was classic. Brings back memories :D

I think I’m gonna cut down to 25 words a day because then these iKnow steps are split better, they’re 100 each time so that’s 4 days a step. At this rate I should finish Core 5k and 6k November time. I’d like to do 50 a day but then I’m just going to get drowned in reviews. I’m coming up to the end of 2k right now!

So I’ve been listening (as I frequently do), to native podcasts. I do this mostly at work, with a headphone, playing in the background as I do other things.

I’ve heard it’s good to have native audio playing around you as much as possible, but I can’t understand a single thing of what’s going on in any of these podcasts. I can maybe pick up 5% of the words being said, and I never have the slightest idea what’s being talked about. Even stuff for kids is far beyond me.

And worse still, if I’m doing something else, I’ll tend to tune it out somewhat as my mind is preoccupied, making it seem like I’m “wasting” the audio.

What has me curious is, is it at all beneficial to listen to audio when you can’t understand a single thing and/or aren’t really listening closely? Or is it just a waste of time until you’ve acquired some actual vocab to work with?

As it stands, I don’t really feel I’ve “learned” anything by listening to it at the level I am now. Should I carry on listening to it, or just wait until I’m at a higher level and can make better use of the audio?

I’d continue to listen even though you don’t understand much of it. This will be beneficial to you in the long term. You’ll surprise yourself one day when you’ll be able to undestand most of what’s being said. It won’t harm you in any way. Another way to look upon it is like this, when we were younger and first learning to speak, we were listening to conversations we didn’t understand. Gradually over time we pick up more words and the ability to get better at speaking. Doing that with another language when we’re older, we already have an advatange in a way.

I’ve been thinking of going onto learning Mandarin after Japanese, so probably when I finish university or slightly before. Career wise I’m aiming to use my degree to go into the localisation of films, games, tv shows and more minor things like instruction manuals. If that doesn’t pan out there’s always teaching English.

Anyway as for today I got a bit closer to finishing Core2k, did more particle studying.
