@ Yggbert
That’s awesome you want to learn Mandarin after Japanese. I plan to do that too. Good luck with everything.June 29, 2012 at 5:41 am #32449@kanjiman8 Thanks! I figure being a master of kanji after 4 years of Japanese should give me a bit of an edge for Mandarin, it’d be killer to know both for business. Though hopefully I’ll land a good job in localisation first and Mandarin will just be a hobby. :)

Knowing kanji will definitely help with learning Mandarin. Written Chinese has two scripts, simplified and traditional. People say it’s easier to learn traditional first then simplified. Kanji seems to be a mix of both simplified and traditional. Mainland China uses simplified script, Taiwan uses traditional and Hong Kong and most overseas Chinese communities use Traditional too.I pretty much have the same goal as you. Knowing both Japanese and Mandarin will look impressive on a CV/Resume.
Btw, are you from the UK? I seem to remember you said you were in another thread a while ago. If so, which part?
June 29, 2012 at 6:32 am #32451I live near Birmingham and it is not very exciting!
June 29, 2012 at 7:27 am #32452Ah, Birmingham. I’ve passed through their once a long time ago. I’m in the South of England in West Sussex. I can relate about it not being exciting.
June 29, 2012 at 12:10 pm #32463Birmingham’s not so bad, but Warwick/Leamington…yawn!
June 29, 2012 at 12:37 pm #32464That sounds as boring as the town I’m in. I live in a small town, mainly a coummuter town but there’s a few businesses. Closest thing here to Asian culture is the Chinese restaurants and takeaways.
June 29, 2012 at 12:43 pm #32465We have a great Chinese restaurant, the buffet is amazing. Also seem to attract quite a lot of people from Asia these days!
and am I going crazy or do the new lessons in S7 seem quite thin on content compared to previous ones? Maybe they aren’t complicated enough to require multiple pages but even the simpler stuff in previous seasons had more content generally if I remember right.
June 29, 2012 at 1:10 pm #32466JLPT on Sunday, traveling tomorrow to London!! If the other Mark even reads this – sadly I won’t have much time after the test till I have to leave for the airport, but I hope we can actually meet up ^^;
If anyone else taking it this time around, GL!

The Chinese restaurants here do awesome food too. Kinda pricy though. Once the new update is rolled out, the Season 7 lessons might be expanded. Guess we will have to wait and see.@ Mark Webber
Good luck with the JLPT. What level are you taking? I bet your flying into Heathrow?June 29, 2012 at 3:27 pm #32470Had an interview for ASDA today; first thing the interviewer commented on/asked about from my application was that I mentioned studying Japanese :D Got the job in the end :)
Getting really frustrated at how many cards in Core2k/6k have the same/similar English words on the back; makes it really difficult to distil the correct meaning and distinguish between cards. If I see one more card with either something like “state of affairs”, “situation”, “circumstances” or “conditions”, I think I might scream ¬_¬ That or “management”, “operation” or [word-I'm-forgetting]. “Utilisation” and “usage” are culprits of this too. “Advancement” is starting to annoy as well.

Gatwick is about a 20 minute drive from my house. If I was taking the JLPT this year I would asked you if you were interested in meeting up. Anyway, good luck with the JLPT. Let us know how you found it.@ Mister M
