Haha, yeah I suddenly noticed that earlier. I completely misread the title of that chapter. Edited all previous posts to the correct word.

What season and chapter have you got upto?

I’m reviewing my first radicals and first chunk of sentences(Anki). It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to visit a Japanese website and be able to understand stuff like です, さん, some basic words and stuff like that. Stating the obvious, I have a long way to go, but I’m working my way up. :)

I just typed up a long answer that the internet ate and now I am sad.

I finished season 7 before the new new stuff. Finished Genki 1, I like it for the reading section as you know all the grammar and 90% of the vocab so it’s good practice and motivating. I’m not a fan of the teaching, they don’t explain things very well to me, but I use A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar alongside it, which I really like. I’d like to use Effective Communication but that re-releases next month. I’m going through Core6k as well, though more in order of vocab words I discover from learning

If you can get your hands on genki from the library, or something, it’s nice to have for the reading section. Not sure I would pay for it though, especially as you will know 70% of Genki 1 from doing textfugu.

Those little things keep adding up. :-)

Where’d you find out that Effective Communication is re-releasing? I was thinking of getting it soon but if there are a lot of changes to it I will wait.

You’re pretty far into your studies. Congrats. That’s what I also discovered while looking at books I bought before studying on TF. It’s very hard to use them for self studying as a beginner. You either need to have gone through a few seasons on TF or have someone help you go through them. I plan to buy A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar. Which edition of Genki are you using? First edition from 1999 or the re-released edition from last year? I have the first edition in digital form. Core6k seems to be a popular choice among fellow TF’ers.

    @ Clement
According to Amazon, it’s being re-released next month on August 3rd. I can’t be sure but I think it’s the same book and no changes will be made. Basically what happened was, Kodansha International who was the previous publisher, closed down. It looks like another section of Kodansha LTD called Kodansha USA has taken over the rights. You can read more on the story here.

Thanks for the info! Well even if there are no changes, Amazons pre-order price is the best one I’ve seen so I will wait for this release.

I’m looking at reviews of A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar and it looks like this is also a great book to buy.

I never bothered to get Genki, but I think this pic might show you why.

I’ve laid out all my Japanese gooks in one place (excluding Manga of course.

Just a note, I inherited some from teachers who left Japan and didn’t want to take them home with them, and I’ve given some of the lower level book to my need co-workers who needed a head start w/ Japanese. So for number of volumes, maybe it’s equal.

Woah, that’s an awesome collection Kiai. Which ones would you recommend? I’ve read good reviews on the Basic Kanji books and Minna no Nihongo.

One great one that I read over an over is the top row, 4th from the left. “Oxford Japanese: Grammar and Verbs”. I got it back when I lived in Canada but it was great to get me started. Note: it has no furigana, instead it has everything in English, Kanji and Romaji.

The middle row, the three books on the left really helped me get ready for JLPT N3. But they need a little extra explanation to clarify some subtle differences in similar grammar.

Minna no Nihongo was ok as a beginner text book. I did all of book 1 and a good portion of book 2.) I couldn’t find it now).

I really like one of my latest books. It was a gift from one of my students. Middle row, far right. It’s ALL about Keigo. But it is also 99.9% in Japanese. Only a few words have English translations. (There is some furigana too to help out)

Finally, I just got into a good shadowing book. Top row, 5th from the left. Only done a few units, but it’s great for me to try to sound more natural. Doing ondoku practice is so important if you want any hope of sounding more native. Of course you don’t need a book, any listening resource with a script and translation and mobility is great, but this text has so many situations with different social status ranging from family together, friends, co workers, bosses etc.. It looks great, I can’t wait to get more into it.

I’m using the 1999 version. There are some archaisms in it that you have to watch out for, but Textfugu and DoBJ help with that. There is a reading section at the back that is not immediately apparent, though it only starts to get interesting around chapter 8 I think. I agree on the self learning, textfugu helped a TON with getting over the initial humps and learning about resources (like anki and Lang 8).

You should be able to go through I think the first 6 chapter of genki with ease after textfugu (roughly).

Core6k is really nice because as a beginner you are not exposed to vocab (like through reading books) so it is an easy way to study vocab without having to do any collection work. Hopefully I will be reading by the time I finish.

    @Clement
I think kanjiman answered best. Maybe rerelease was the wrong word. Resale? Hehe I don’t know. :P

@kanjiman (from a long time ago) – Yes, I do plan on coming back although I have no actual “plans” at this point, just a vague sense that I’ll be here again someday.

I have not been studying at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, it was more like a sudden pang, and the result of a zany creative streak. :)
