So since I’m on a “classic games” kick, I started playing the Japanese version of Final Fantasy IV for the SNES. So far I haven’t got the slightest idea what’s going on, but hopefully I can at least harvest some fresh vocab from it, if not much else.
August 19, 2012 at 3:24 pm #34649has anyone tried japanesepod101.com ? it was recommended to me and i was wondering if anyone had tried to use it.
August 19, 2012 at 8:01 pm #34651I have, it has great podcasts, engaging conversations that seem like you would hear out and about. There is a lot of English in them though, so, if you are going totally immersion, it may not be for you. The kana learning area is cool, the flashcards are srs style. Has a dictionary area, active forums, lots of videos, printable pdfs for the lesson notes, but I preferred to write my own. You can select your own vocabulary for the flashcards. The kanji area though is sorely lacking in my mind, but, that’s me. I enjoyed it, but, it’s kinda expensive, the free section doesn’t offer much in the way of resources, though they did just open a resource area in the free stuff; I haven’t gone to check it out yet, I’m enjoying textfugu more than I did JPod101. I may not have given it a fair shot, honestly, I didn’t do it consistently. It was real easy to go too fast since you were listening to the podcasts it seemed. Just my two cents.

The intermediate level drops a ton of the English out, and I’m assuming advanced does as well, so if you’re going for immersion you can just bump up the difficulty. I’m finding Jpod really really awesome for reading (.pdf’s of the conversation) and listening. Being able to read conversations and then listen to them, and then have people talk about the contructions, nuances etc. is really helpful.
I’m not sure I would use it to solely learn, but as a place for reading/listening practice it’s been really helpful.

And also, it gives some pretty insightful things on like how to use certain words or grammar correctly. A pretty good supplement.
Didn’t study at all today :/
August 22, 2012 at 9:01 am #34762My most mature Anki card just got scheduled for 4.1 years from now. I find it incredibly ironic which card it is. 肉

August 22, 2012 at 9:05 pm #34790Welcome back, Kyle!
August 23, 2012 at 4:56 pm #34820what would be the minimum time i should spend each day studying, the thing is i start college full time, and will be working full time starting in a few weeks? any recommendations?
August 23, 2012 at 6:31 pm #34822May I ask how that works to do college full time and work full time?

U a wizard?
August 23, 2012 at 9:42 pm #34840J.J – I would aim for 30 minutes. You might have to break it down into chunks, like 10 minute sessions between classes or a break between school and work. But 30 minutes a day would be doable and would also keep you moving forward in your Japanese studies.
Good luck with both work and school! I took 18 credit hours (the max they’d let me take) and worked 24-30 hours a week for the first year of my college experience. It’s hard, but definitely doable if you have your priorities straight. :) Good luck!

Welcome back. How you finding life back in the States?
OT
I’m finally able to study again after almost a month of stopping. A couple of weeks ago I thought I would have free time again but something cropped up and I had to postpone again until a few days ago. I’ve been taking it slow with my Anki reviews. Not doing too much at once and spreading it out. My next task is to get back to the lessons here on TF. I stopped at Season 5 so that’s where I’ll resume.
August 24, 2012 at 1:17 pm #34881@ missingno15: very cafefully, i work at a hotel so when there is down time i can squeeze in some study time, plus once school starts we will be slower and i might not get the full 40 hours
@winterpromise 31: thanks, i was thinking 30 mins would be good. though i hope to get more than that per day, but my goal is a minimum of 30 mins. i just wanted to be sure that wasn’t too short a time
