That sounds like a really good idea. I’ll check it out, but It probably wouldn’t captivate me unless the stories were to my tastes. I’d love to read something like that with Japanese folklore and mythology.
March 4, 2013 at 5:48 pm #38913From the inside cover:
Level One: Natsume Soseki (from Ten Nights of Dreams)
“The First Night” – A beyond-the-grave romance in which love is proven to be stronger than death.
“The Third Night” – A sinister child confronts a guilt-ridden father with evidence of a crime long past.
“The Fifth Night” – There was love even in the age of samurai–but there were devils too.
“The Seventh Night” – Despair and loneliness make a man do something he will regret–forever.Level Two: Akutagawa Ryunosuke (short stories)
“In a Grove” – A murder has been committed, but which of the seven witnesses is telling the truth?
“Nose” – Primitive plastic surgery has unexpected consequences for an old monk.Level Three: Akutagawa Ryunosuke (short story)
“Rashomon” – Two destitute people confront stark moral choices in a desolate city.“The Fifth Night” sounds like something you might be interested in, Astralfox :D Wouldn’t buy a whole book for one short story though haha.
March 4, 2013 at 9:09 pm #38915Thanks for that rundown, Michael!
Today, I completed… 30 minutes of Anki, wrote an email, and read an NHK news article. Good times.
March 5, 2013 at 11:02 am #38918Those all sound rather interesting, and; ”Primitive plastic surgery has unexpected consequences for an old monk.” !!? Seriously XD
March 5, 2013 at 9:19 pm #38925Today’s studies – finished half an hour of Anki, listened to a Jpod101 lesson, and wrote a lang-8 entry.
March 6, 2013 at 9:43 am #38931On my way of finishing Season 7. It sure was a long journey from Season 1, and it’s still not over yet.
March 6, 2013 at 9:56 pm #38933Shizurin, are you feeling like you know a lot but still have a ton to learn? That’s about how I feel these days. :)
Today’s studies – 30 minutes of Anki, read a news article, wrote an email, and responded to corrections from my lang-8 post. Someone was kind enough to explain her corrections IN Japanese so it’ll probably take another 30 minutes for me to figure out what she said. ;)
March 8, 2013 at 5:41 pm #38963Today I sat down on the couch and started reading a book called 「はらじゅく畑」のおむすび弁当. Without a dictionary.
March 9, 2013 at 8:56 pm #38984Well, you didn’t use a dictionary, but how much did you actually understand, that’s the question? :P
March 10, 2013 at 7:06 pm #39007I actually understood quite a bit of what I read. It’s a foodie book, part cookbook, so not difficult reading. I can’t read it out loud, though. lol. I understood way more of the meanings than I did readings…
March 12, 2013 at 9:04 pm #39033Today – Lang-8 post, Jpod101 lesson, 30 minutes of Anki (finally started Core6000), and I’m about to go sit on the couch with a book.
Anybody else study something interesting today?
March 18, 2013 at 8:21 pm #39149Ok, so today I reached word 100 on Core6k. Yay? lol. I also studied two JapanesePod101 lessons and read two pages in my bento book. The reading is getting easier. Yay!
March 20, 2013 at 10:28 pm #39181Today I reviewed a ton of Anki cards, listened to two JPod101 lessons, read six pages in my Tadoku book, and attempted the first two pages of a novel. That novel is way over my head (my comprehension was way low) and I’m not sure if it’s worth “reading” it for the practice or if I should wait until my vocab level is higher.
March 21, 2013 at 12:02 am #39182I’ve got all three「新世界より」novels on my bookshelf, it’s torture! I want to be able to read them properly, but my vocabulary is too small.
Today I translated (decoded) two pages of another novel, neglected Anki, and started reviewing; days, times, dates and counters in general. I really should catch up with those flashcards.
April 12, 2013 at 9:14 am #39523After such an awesome month in March, my April studying has been minimal so far. Most days I just don’t feel like studying. lol. I put a lot of effort into reading Japanese books last month and I think it wore me out. I really need to get back into my book, especially since it’s due back to the library soon… I’ve been thinking about digging out Bakuman again. I tried reading it early last year but was frustrated at how little I could understand even though I’ve seen the anime.
Today’s Anki session is done. I am keeping up with Anki at least. I reached 500 words on Core6k and finally ran into a couple I didn’t already know. I figure the unknown words are going to increase from here on out, though I just ran across a couple color cards. I learned those several years ago! I have to stop adding new cards on Sunday to let my reviews die down a bit before I leave for vacation on the 21st. I’ll be taking my laptop with me but expect to be rather busy and I don’t want to come home to hundreds of overdue cards.
What is everyone else up to? Any inspiring stories to help those of us who need to rediscover their drive to learn? ;)
