Hi, I’m running into a bit of confusion with the verb ききます (to listen) and which particle to use with it.

My understanding is that the particle を is used for direct objects, while the particle に is used for either indirect objects or for movement. This brings me to my confusion.

Let’s look at this sentence in English: I listened to the radio.

In English, “radio” here is neither a direct nor an indirect object in relation to the verb “listened”. Rather, it is the object of the preposition “to the radio”.

TL;DR My question is this: What particle would I use in translating the sentence “I listened to the radio” to Japanese?

を. If you use に for 聞く, people will probably think you’re asking “I asked the radio a question.”

A little pointer, though: if you try to work out how to structure a sentence by looking at what part everything plays in English, you’re only going to confuse yourself.

    Okay, that makes sense.

    Thanks for the help!

Yah, when used with ‘ni’ the verb becomes “to ask.”
