My little brother was obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog back then… I had to sit through hours of it recorded from the TV.
He even went as far as to have a stained glass bedroom window, which was Sonic in a golden ring.

Wow, that sounds ridiculous. I promise I didn’t live in a castle or anything… my Dad just makes windows haha!

@Mister – Now you’ve done it! Don’t get me started on Nintendos :P. Actually my first memory of any gaming system was the NES my older brother had (mostly putting the orange gun to the screen to cheat in Duck Hunt), my family had entirely skipped SNES and I had an N64. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the N64. My younger brother and I spent most of our childhood conquering games together. But now that I’m older I have a SNES and the variety, quality, and difficulty offered for the SNES is far greater than that of the N64. Sure N64 has some really REALLY awesome games, but compared to the SNES, not even close. Especially now that I am revisiting and re-playing a lot of things on the N64 I had in my childhood and looking at them I’ve often found myself thinking “WTF, why did I think this game was good/cool?”. The N64 for the most part had really goofy, early stages of 3D graphics and they looked terrible (clearly there are a few exceptions), and aside from the big hits they often seem to be quite short as well. Not to mention there are SO MANY foreign games for the SNES that are awesome that I can’t even touch right now (come on Japanese learning!).

My fondest video game memories are of the N64, GameBoy, GameCube. It wasn’t until later in life that I discovered what a foolish mistake my family made by skipping the SNES. :P

My problem with both the NES and SNES is that the bulk of games are side scrollers with not a whole lot of variation, the N64 was mostly a failure with little third party support so its library kinda sucks, and hot damn the games for that thing were crazy expensive, the limitation of cartridges led to pretty poor 3D graphics too. The PS1 ran circles around it despite being 2-3 years older.

The Dreamcast was my favourite console of the 90s even if it was at the very end of the era, because Shenmue! I’m gonna replay Shenmue 2 soon, the Dreamcast version only has Japanese voice acting.

okay, you guys lost me! haha

@Larisa: Hmmm… guess I’ll have to try a SNES then :P I *did* play A Link to the Past, but emulators can’t compare to the real thing.
Also, you don’t play Japanese games *because* you know Japanese, you play Japanese games SO that you know Japanese! ;) So go out and get some Japanese games so you can start learning Japanese :D Generally in PAL region countries, you don’t get the option to switch game language to Japanese (usually just French, German, Dutch, Italian and/or Spanish, though it can vary), but luckily I found out that Sonic Adventure 2: Battle DOES let you put both audio and subtitles to Japanese! Man, that was awesome :3 Hearing different voice acting was pretty cool anyway, but the fact that the game had subtitles really helped engage with it.
And while it’s out-with the realm of “90s” discussion, I wholeheartedly agree that the GameCube deserves 3 thumbs up :D I don’t have THAT many games for it, unfortunately, but it’s really an underrated console I think. Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Luigi’s Mansion, aforementioned Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, etc.
And please, go on about Nintendos as much as you want haha ;)

OH HOW COULD I FORGET! SUPER SMASH BROS. MELEE!!! :D That was just… legendary :’) Beats Brawl hands down, especially when it comes to Target Test. (If you had the original SSB, do you remember the platforms minigame? Board the Platforms was it?)

@Yggbert: I didn’t own a Dreamcast, but my friend did. At the time, the big chunky controller put me off I think, and I never really liked the console, but now though, I really fancy playing it again! :D It would have been damn successful if it hadn’t been for the PS2 haha. SEGA would probably still be making consoles now… Sony! Y U NO lay off for a while to give SEGA a chance?! :P

@Tori: When did we lose you? :P

I’m sorry, I just had to chime in to say that the Dreamcast is the best console ever.

    K, I’m done.
    :D

EdiT: It’s the console in my forum picture, too!

@Tori “SNES” stands for “Super Nintendo Entertainment System”. You know, the console the original Super Mario World was on? Please tell me you’ve played on that console before?
If not, I weep for you. You poor, poor soul. :3

Successor to the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and predecessor to the N64 (Nintendo 64).
It had games like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Street Fighter II, Star Fox and Yoshi’s Island.

I remember the N64, I used to use my bro’s….isn’t it crazy how much technology has advanced since then?? I mean, now we’ve got the wii and everything, it’s just a matter of time before we create a game console like the one in .hack//!

@Mister – I actually have 星のカービィ:スーパーデラックス (Kirby Superstar Saga). Also, the GameBoy player for the GameCube is the coolest add-on ever. <3 Maybe you should fly on over to Central Missouri, USA and I can show you what the SNES is all about :D

Since the Wii has been mentioned, I just want to say: worst name ever. There’s seriously no way to say out loud that you’re going to play on it without sounding disgusting. “I’m just going to play with the Wii now.”

I haver never thought “Wii” as something disgusting to say, until now that is. I hope you are glad for planting that thought inside my head :p

Is everyone here strictly retro consoles (nowt wrong with that by the way… my friend has a collection of every console I can think of, awesome fun!) or do any of you guys have an Xbox360?
