Today I learned that the character Guru-Guru – from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (who you may know better as “that weird windmill guy from Ocarina of Time”) – gets his name from the onomatopoeic 「ぐるぐる」[turning round and round; going around in circles] :D

    ~たばかり verb form!

Now I don’t need to use 今ぐらい etc.

    An example sentence on jisho.org:
    「今は外出しないで。もうすぐ昼ご飯にするとこだから。」
“Don’t go out now. We’re about to have lunch.”

Mod Edit: Try to keep it PG-13 please ^^

Today I learned that there still is a lot to learn (and review). Again.
Gratz on brushing up your “important vocab” Michael =)

I had a feeling that might get edited :P But it’s not like I was swearing – it was just the name of a bodily function, like “breathing” or “urination”. And it’s not like it was a vulgar way of describing it, it was proper terminology. It’s in the dictionary for crying out loud! :D

外出し – look it up, peeps ;)

Plenty of dictionaries, Jim Breen’s included, have quite a lot of non-pg13 material. I don’t think any reference to that action is ever included in a PG-13 rated feature. :P

Well, there was that one time in Pokémon where Misty-

Oh wait, I’m thinking of a different thing…

Last week I learned the kanji for てんどん (tempura rice bowl) is 天丼。天 is the kanji for heaven, and if you’ve ever had tempura, you know it’s the food of the gods, so this makes sense!

Insanely common kanji, incredibly useful. 天ぷら is pretty great.

Having it called “tendon” gives me the image of tempura pig’s tendons XD Just lovely.

Today I learned the phrase 会社帰りに, which means “on the way home from work.” What makes this a little more interesting than it would otherwise be is the way it is read– かいしゃがえりに. Note the がえり, where you might have expected かえり.

Changing the pronunciation of words in compounds is common enough that it has a name– rendaku. It is yet another one of those things which you can’t learn by learning a rule. You just have to get used to what sounds correct and what doesn’t.

A billion technical specific vocab that isn’t at all useful for everyday life from Gundam Origin.

    Also

見殺し [みごろし] (n), letting (someone) die without helping

Today I learned about the contraction ては -> ちゃ, as in:

    あまり欲を出しちゃだめだよ。

Wikipedia has a useful list of contractions.
