Ditto to Dre2dre2. I don’t think Koichi owes it to Textfugu members to provide the E-book for free or even at a discount. It seems, from looking at the ToC and reading the Tofugu post, that the book covers less about the language specifically and is more about learning strategies and motivation. A lot of that is already on this site anyway. I’ll probably buy the book since it’s only $10 and give it a read. It’s nice to know that I’ll be buying something that is actually finished. If it seems like a good value, I’ll be satisfied.
And Andrew, I’m taking your advice.
March 14, 2012 at 4:46 pm #27903There was a section on the (one of MANY) old TF dashboards that was titled “E-books”. It was my understanding at the time that he was going to be writing companion e-books for TextFugu subscribers for free. That would only really make sense if they were mini books, like reference guides or study tips, not a full book like he’s written now, but oh well. Not buying it because I don’t really need it – any good study habits have either previously been mentioned in TextFugu or I’ve come across them elsewhere/developed them myself. I’d actually recommend somebody buy it over TextFugu however, if they were just starting out, and use some other source for the actual learning.
It’s funny how so many threads on this forum descend into “Koichi you SOB, go faster! This isn’t good enough! We pay (____THIS____) much and we get (_THIS_) much! Like doubleyooh-tee-ehf, mate…”. I’m not complaining, I usually quite enjoy it :P Just pointing it out.

AnonymousWe should thank Koichi for all the hard work he has done instead of being impatient. I’m sure he’s worked hard for all of us. :) I’m going to support him by buying the e-book.
March 14, 2012 at 5:50 pm #27906I don’t expect to get any ebooks for free as a member, and don’t think there’s a problem with Koichi creating additional revenue streams.
I just think it’s a shame if/when the TextFugu textbook gets neglected because of them.
March 14, 2012 at 6:22 pm #27908@ Missing – not too many people are complaining about it being too slow, I think the complaints are that it is going slower than promised. For example, on the last page of the new chapter it is mentioned that the kanji (7.3) will be up in a few days. It took 8 days. I’m not saying that 8 days is too long, but it’s more than a few. It’s these little delays and broken promises that lead to all the complaints of things taking too long or going to slow. If something is going to take a week, say it will take a week. Don’t say things like “we add a couple more chapters every month” if you’re only adding one a month. If it takes a month, say so.
(I don’t know when texfugu started exactly but I signed up early 2010, if things were coming at the pace a even one chapter a month, there should be over 100 as opposed to the current 64.)March 16, 2012 at 11:33 am #27989Obviously being truthful gets you less customers :P The person sees “We add a couple more chapters every month” and says “Oh boy! I’ll definitely get my money’s worth :D”. Then once they’ve parted with the cash, they’re met with “Oh, did we say “a couple of chapters every MONTH”? We meant “whenever we feel like it” *LOLface*! Our bad, but sorry no refunds *trollface*”.
Having said all this, he *did* just upload 40 kanji lessons at once. Core content would be 9001x better, but at least it’s something (for the people who still read them, anyway).
I don’t use TextFugu any more – apart from the forum of course – because of this slowness. So I’m not complaining saying Koichi should speed up for *me*, it’s just that I don’t like the raw deal that other users get sometimes. Plus it’s fun ;)
March 17, 2012 at 1:47 am #28058Textfugu used to have an e-books link on the download page(that led nowhere, of course) that said coming soon. I assumed that I was going to have the books that he was writing with my Textfugu membership. That being said I completely understand Koichi needing rent money and/or money to live off of. I was just expecting the e-books to be free for Textfugu members. Maybe it has something to do with the split between lifetime and pay-as-you-go members. If so maybe he can find a way to offer it free to only lifetime members?
I will buy the e-book if Koichi personally states that he will not offer if for free to Textfugu members. Only waiting because I am a poor college student and don’t want to pay for something that will be free. Otherwise I will buy it if it is not going to be free. I respect Koichi and his decisions for the company that he has made. I just really want to read his book. I’m currently having a hard time finding motivation to study. Maybe he could offer it to Textfugu’s members for a reduced price?
(Edit)
Also, to people complaining about Koichi taking his time or reneging on promises. He is a human. He has Hashi as the only person working with him in his office(as far as I know). Humans go through uncountable struggles everyday. I am sure he is as dedicated to his supporters as ever. Otherwise he would not even bother to update us on anything like so many other companies. Give him the benefit of the doubt. You obviously purchased access to his website based on faith. He’s an admirable guy and he won’t let you down in the long run. One person trying to keep many satisfied is very difficult.March 17, 2012 at 1:43 pm #28070Koichi stated that Textfugu members will always have a 66% discount on the e-book from what I saw on his twitter. It’s not free, but we do get a special price, so I wouldn’t complain too much.
You have to keep in mind that Koichi has allowed us to pay a one-time fee, which means that once we sign up..he gets nothing from us. And so, if he isn’t getting a lot of people to join, he isn’t making a ton of money. He has to do other things to make up for it then, and if he has to spend time finding other ways to make money, that means less time to update this site. But he has given us other options to help us continue on without this site. So there’s that.
Anyway. I agree though, he should at least be up front and tell us he won’t have lessons as often as he claims. Or at least say that he likes to TRY to have lessons added at certain intervals. But, it would be nice also to get updates saying if he can’t for whatever reason. (Maybe he does? I haven’t been on lately. College keeps me busy).
Anyway – to stay on track. I would love to buy the e-book. Especially at this low price! But I have a convention coming up and I need my money to be in other places. /LE SIGH. But it seems it’s more just motivational tools, things we already have here. Anyway, I might purchase it in the future.

March 17, 2012 at 8:43 pm #28076@Nick: It’s not so much that he’s slow, it’s that he doesn’t deliver what he promises sometimes (e.g. “a couple new chapters each month”). If he said “chapters appear whenever I’m not doing something else” or “when the planets align”, then fair enough, he’s being honest, but I guess that wouldn’t get many customers. I think he’s just spreading himself too thinly, taking on too much at once, really. Also, he has Hashi, John and Viet to help (though not with the writing of TextFugu), but instead of hiring people to *lessen* the current workload, he just starts many other little side-projects and features, effectively leaving himself with the same workload as before. Obviously this is just the opinion of the outside observer and not actual fact.
March 18, 2012 at 2:38 pm #28093After reading through this thread, I can understand some fellow members frustrations at TextFugu being incomplete or Koichi not adding new lessons regularly. The way I see it is, TextFugu is a work in progress. Koichi has been learning Japanese for years now. He’s giving us indispensable knowledge, tips and hints that we wouldn’t get from anywhere else. His way of teaching Japanese is the best self study method and far better than going through a physical textbook or software like Rosetta Stone.
I first became aware of TextFugu after reading articles on Tofugu and watching Koichi’s YouTube videos. I instantly found them interesting and funny. This then made me take out a months trial membership to see if I liked TextFugu or not. After a few days, I then upgraded to a lifetime membership. I have to say, this is the best $120 I’ve ever spent.
I’m sure it takes awhile to start writing up new lessons from scratch, then going through them to see if they make sense from us (the students) point of view. You can forgive Koichi for not sticking to his promised timeframe. He doesn’t want to teach us something incorrect or in a way we won’t understand.
For anyone that has finished all the current lessons on TextFugu and waiting for more to be published, you can always subscribe to Gakuu.com. Gakuu is a sister site to TextFugu. Koichi and the guy who runs Gakuu (Michael), know each other and I’ve even seen him post on the TextFugu forums sometimes.
If you go to the dashboard and click “Bonus” you can subscribe to Gakuu at 80% off the full price by clicking on the link there. That in itself is also a great deal. I bought a membership to Gakuu soon after the 80% off promotion began. I think I paid $20 which is a bargain for a lifetime membership. I won’t be using Gakuu just yet though as I am still going through TextFugu.
As for the recently published ebook and any future ones, I have no problem paying for them. As TextFugu members we get 66% off the first one. I don’t mind paying $10 for something that will ultimately help me in the long run. The ebook will have chapters added to it in the future. If you really don’t like it, you can always get a refund up until 60 days after purchase.
I am grateful for all Koichi and Hashi have done for Tofugu and TextFugu. I look forward to going through TextFugu, and all ebooks that will be published. I hope this community gets even more stronger and bigger.
March 19, 2012 at 3:57 pm #28149I have a question to those who bought the book already. What’s the 30daysebookepub.epub and the .ds_store files in the download for? I’m probably going to just read it on my android using Adobe Reader but was curious as to what those extra files are for.
March 19, 2012 at 5:22 pm #28159They’re nothing to worry about. Check out the following links for brief explanations on both file formats.

March 19, 2012 at 5:51 pm #28161@kanjiman8: You can’t forgive him for not sticking to the timeframe. Yes, it takes a while to write lessons, but that doesn’t make the waiting any less annoying or acceptable.
Time for another analogy (man, I love thinking these up) :D
Say you go to a restaurant. You order some kind of fish dish and the waiter says “That should take about 20-30 minutes” (because that’s what waiters say), “Is that ok?”. “Sure is!” you reply, “Sounds delicious!”. The waiter asks “Would you mind paying for it just now, before it’s ready?”. You look at him, puzzled, but agree nonetheless; you’ve heard the fish here is pretty good. One hour later, you call the waiter over to ask if something is wrong and why it’s taking so much longer than expected. “Oh, our chef Boris is still out catching the fish; shan’t be long now.” “Out catching the fish!? You told me it would be half an hour…” “Sorry sir, we underestimated how long it takes to catch a fish; please sit tight.” “I think I’ll dine elsewhere, this is ridiculous; now about that money I paid earlier…” “Oh, sorry, no refunds. You’ll just have to wait, I’m afraid *trollface*”.
Several hours later, Boris comes in the door, looking exhausted. “What the !@##!?&*, Boris!? Where have you been?! It feels like I’ve been waiting on this fish forever!!” “I had to take a shift at my other restaurant on the way back: the income from the this place isn’t enough to keep us going, so I have 3 other jobs to make ends meet.” “Could you not have cooked my fish and THEN went to your other restaurant?” “…no.” “Well, it’s been so long since I ordered, I’ve eaten several dozen breadsticks already; I’m not hungry for fish any more.” “But you’ve paid for the fish already!” “Then serve it to the next customer, I don’t care, I’m outta here.”
As you exit, you turn back to take one last look at the restaurant, one that had been so promising to begin with, a single tear rolling down your cheek. This music plays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6vek6NRU3s#t=0m28s
THE END
March 19, 2012 at 6:00 pm #28164O and something else, is the streak sheet explained somewhere in the book? Because I’m only on day 1 and I’m not sure what to do with it…
March 19, 2012 at 6:07 pm #28165
AnonymousYup, the streak sheet is explained a few days later, I think!
