    Hi All

I’m taking a two week Japanese course in Tokyo in August (2012) and will be there for a total of three weeks. I’m planning to get a JR Pass for the last two weeks and travel to Kyoto, perhaps a couple other places on the weekends, and as many day trip locations as I can.

Does anybody have any suggestions for interesting places to go, or must-eat-at restaurants? As a side note, I’m planning to study Japanese history during the Occupation and immediate post-Occupation periods, so if anyone has ideas related to that, they would be doubly appreciated.

(Though obviously any tips at all are appreciated.)

    Thanks!

You might get better responses here http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/quedisplay.html

Japan-Guide forum is a lot busier than this forum and covers a wide variety of areas. TF is mainly for learning Japanese.

I can’t give any specific suggestions, as I’ve never been, but I generally find a good way to explore a place is to go geocaching – I’ve seen some wonderful places through ‘caching that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

If you watch everything in this video, you will find out all the things you need to see in Kyoto other than 金閣寺

That is a very nice video :p
Could also just watch 「横山由依がはんなり巡る京都・美の音色が放送になります!」 though those episodes are quite a bit longer lol.
