@ RavenTwoFive yeah I actually looked it up a few hours ago lol. It was ridiculously easy. I was just under the impression there were 50 steps and some archaic installation process, because a few weeks ago, I looked up a tutorial, and got a wall of text a dozen pages long, so I just closed my browser and forgot about it. I believe I was looking at an XP tutorial though… but now It works perfectly. やった!

@KiaiFighter thanks! It’ll be great to converse with other learners

Why on earth would anyone cosplay to a lesson?

Does anyone in this class of yours seem to have any previous experience with the language then?

In my experience, the weeaboos get weeded out of Japanese lessons after about second year. But the first couple of years of Japanese are indeed usually weeaboo central, unfortunately :[

I suppose that, while I won’t have anyone tell me anime/manga and music aren’t a good enough reason to learn Japanese, if, like a lot of people who seem to start with that motivation, you think you’ll understand within a few months your boned from the beginning…

It’s not necessarily a problem though, their is always the satisfactions of usually being slightly better at it than them and as people are so quick to point out, not sounding like a high-school girl all the time…

I took a Japanese course last spring semester and I compared it to TextFugu. I took the course before looking at TextFugu first though, but I came to the realization that the time I spent in the class (about 5 months, met twice a week though), I got WAY more out of TextFugu than the class. With my class though, we went slow because people didn’t do their homework and we had to slow down the pace :(. Tell me how your class progresses this year.

Material learned in 5 months in a college class = 1 month of TextFugu for me.

Learning Japanese here in Denmark for 1 year(most basic level) will teach you this:

    Reading, reading alloud, pronouncing right
    Hiragana
    Katakana
    250 kanji
    The most central grammar.

That seems to be a bit more than the 23 you will be learning… :O

@ Ryuuguu Azuma Not really.. I mean, it looks like most of the people ware from the first class (jpn85) from the semester before, but aside from some basic phrases, a lot of them said they forgot a lot over the summer.. so I guess they haven’t been using it or studying it for the past 3 months. tsk.

Also, I’m the first to admit that I got the idea to finally do this with my life when I was watching Evangelion 2.22, so I totally understand that being a big reason. I love Jrock/pop as much as anyone else probably does on here, but reasons behind the long term goals run much deeper than my love for anime/vidya/manga/etc. will ever carry me. Imagine moving to america because you were a big Sienfeld fan. Sounds a little off, right? haha

@hashi yeah I got that feeling.. Feels kind of bad on my end because, basically, we all enjoy the same stuff, but ya know… It’s embarrassing to tell people what you’re trying to do with your life, and then have it associated with kids who wear….plated headbands on the regular.

@Paladin I feel ya. Textfgu (along with other internet resources) appear to be far more useful.. but, no reason I can’t stay ahead of the pack with those resources while letting the classes just kind of run on in the background, eh?

@ Mark Weber yeah, not sure who decides these things haha. The next semester in this course tackles.. 70 kanji. It looks like all the kanji they teach in this current semester (going by the back of the textbook) is stuff I’m already a good deal familiar with, thanks to Textfugu

    I dunno, that Seinfeld’s pretty funny…

@Multhany: No romaji?! Oh god, I hope my (possible) lecturers take that approach too :P If I get a class full of weeaboos, I’ll just talk to them using all the Japanese I know already and watch their faces fall, eyes streaming with tears of fear – it will be a joyous day… :’) hehe

Also, though you’ve already done it, TextFugu has a few pages on using/installing Japanese IMEs – http://www.textfugu.com/season-3/social-learning/2-2/

“So, uh… are there any other words you know *besides* “kawaaaiiiiiiiiii desssuuuuuuuu!!!1″? No?”

I can give myself ‘drill hair’ and laugh like a proper little ojousama… is that the kind of thing your looking for? :D

i don’t even know what drill hair is……..

    (googling)…….

Ah. does that work in real gravity? haha

@Michael Hmm.. I guess I totally passed that part over. You might get unlucky and have to deal with romaji. I was told that most starting jpn classes use it, from my professor. Who wasn’t sure why i was placed in the next level up class (but there weren’t any prerequisites, so.. beats me)

Well, I learned my Hiragana relatively quickly… 1 month maybe, as for Katakana, no clue at this point. And I’m just getting through Textfugu’s first 2 stroke kanji which is blowing my mind, おんよみ & くんよみ are just eating at my brain, one gnawing at the left hemisphere, the other at the right.

All I know are the first 8 out of 12 2-stroke which is still a “whhaa?” feeling.

So if your class still avoids romaji, most of the otakus will drop like flys, having no real goal besides learning to understand their favorite artfully drawn ninja.

I kind of feel sorry for these weeaboos, but at the same time I don’t understand their thinking.
Do they think Japanese is easy?
I mean since most drop out, there must be some kind of realization on their part.

Anyway, good luck! Keep us updated:D

    #16339

It’s not so much that its easy, and it’s not limited to your so-called ‘weeaboos’…

It’s the same with anyone who starts anything because they really enjoy it. You think to yourself “I love this so I’ll be really motivated and I’ll probably work hard!” Think kung-fu fans who start martial arts then quit after a few weeks…

err.. since there hasn’t been any activity for the past two days, I guess I’ll just share something cool that I found out.

Turns out, my school doesn’t offer a semester abroad.

    It only offers a year!

    see what I did there?

thought it was for only one semester.. but a whole year. oh boy
