Cool! A year abroad would be awesome. Are you going to go for it?
August 28, 2011 at 7:20 pm #16469Yeah definitely! It probably won’t be for another 2-3 semesters, and it’s going to take a lot of work, but it’s an actual realistic goal lol.
My university has a partnership with Konan University in Kobe. It’s with a host family, and extensive Japanese linguistics courses 5 days a week, apparently. Sure, it’s going to cost an arm and a leg.. and maybe another arm.. but that’s what working hard for scholarships/grants/financial aid is for, eh?
August 28, 2011 at 9:48 pm #16470@Multany … im trying as hard as possible to melt a hole in your face with my jealousy….. is it working? Maybe starting to feel a little tickle? :D

August 29, 2011 at 6:27 am #16477Since you know about the opportunity in advance, I bet you could come up with a bunch of scholarships and grants and such. Good luck! I hope you can go!
August 29, 2011 at 9:50 am #16481If your school’s program is too expensive, I know you can usually shop around and find other programs to apply to that might be cheaper; although your school might not accept all the credits you earn over in Japan.
Still, I think it’s worth looking into.
August 29, 2011 at 10:43 am #16486Well, it’s going to cost around $11,000, and that’s in 2011 money. So it’ll probaly go up. I haven’t sat down with my counceller yet, but It looks like I can basically do what I’ve been doing for school money, and apply it to this.
And since my university has this particular exchange program set up as part of my major with Konan University, wouldn’t that mean the credits are transferrable?
I’ll definitely look into possible alt methods though if it comes to that.
Crossing my fingers that it’s somewhat streamlined, ya know.
Hashi, do you have experience with an abroad program?
Or anyone reading this, for that matter. I’m interested in stories if you guys have them!
August 29, 2011 at 11:00 am #16487@Dazanan: it does tickle. But not on my face.
August 29, 2011 at 11:40 am #16488What I meant was that if you apply to a study abroad program outside of your school, then there might be problems with transferring credits.
But if you end up going to Konan through your school’s program, then there should be any problems with credits :)
And I applied to my school’s study abroad program, but wasn’t accepted :(((((

full tuition scholarship to japan but piss hard to pass if you are a student of medicine
August 29, 2011 at 6:56 pm #16533@Hashi Ah, how come you weren’t? I didn’t know they could just say “nah.. we don;t want you to come to our country..” Was it a sort of program with only a limited amount of accepted applicants?
@missingno15 that is wayyy over my head anyhow haha
Today in class, we learned the first 15 katakana! awesome!…………………
At least now I have plenty of time to worry about other subjects, rather than trying to remember my あ’s and か’s lol.
August 30, 2011 at 2:04 am #16576Yeah, the program only sent a handful of people, and I didn’t have to foresight to sign up for another one.
August 30, 2011 at 2:50 am #16577aw that blows =/
August 30, 2011 at 8:36 am #16590Yeah, but nbd though because I’m sure I’ll get to go to Japan anyway, hopefully in the not-so-distant future :)
Multany when are you planning to apply to the program? Don’t most people go their junior year?
August 30, 2011 at 3:03 pm #16613Well that’s good to hear! (you should write it off as a fugu business expense >_>)
Well, actually, I’m not sure when I have to apply. I’m going to sit down with my counselor really soon.
this has been my 3rd college since I was 18 (as I’ve been moving all over the past few years), and I’ve been taking some time off in between semesters, and I’m still not sure which credits transferred where, and I STILL have to transfer to the local university soon before I can move on to japan haha. It’s a whole jigsaw puzzle that i was told not to worry about until at least the end of this semester… gotta love school administration.
this is my 4th semester though, so yeah, I’m probably setting up an appointment for sometime this week
August 30, 2011 at 3:07 pm #16615Also, I should add, that the exchange program says I need a year of Japanese classes .. so I at least need one more semester of language..
bleh.
Just imagine me with a dead blank stare, shrugging off into space.
yep. shrugging into space.
