It seems like I have indeed been advancing, albeit slowly. Almost daily I give myself a small surprise at being able to understand something I didn’t expect to or respond quickly and accurately to some question. I am getting better, but it doesn’t seem terribly rewarding for some reason. Maybe I’m just getting to the point where I realize that there is nothing magical about something just because it is said or written in Japanese. It’s the same old boring stuff. Maybe it’s because I’m moving back to the States soon and am losing interest in the language in spite of myself. Anyway, it’s annoying. Any suggestions?

Just make sure you’re having enough fun with it.

Anonymoushttp://www.textfugu.com/season-3/the-dip/ Maybe this would help?
But I agree with Missing about idols, because they definitely help me advance forward in Japanese learning.June 13, 2012 at 8:31 pm #31824I can’t really offer any suggestions, but I can at least offer empathy. In recent times I’ve also noticed the “magic” wearing off.
I’ve slowly begun losing interest in not just the language, but in Japan in general. I used to listen to my usual podcasts religiously, nowadays I tend to pull the “eh, I’ll hear ‘em later” card. I haven’t watched anime in months, and I barely listen to Japanese music at all any more.
I’ve begun switching some things back into English, and when I go to my favourite restaurant I scarcely bother speaking Japanese to the staff any more, at most forcing out a weak “arigatou” and not much more.
I haven’t studied at all in what must be a year by now, and despite that I still note some small improvements here and there. But I was shocked to find myself actually feeling “sick” of seeing hiragana and kanji that I don’t understand. At this point, the few vestiges of Japanese “study” that remain in my life are done more out of habit than anything else.
So long story short, all I can say is that I understand where you’re coming from. The most I can offer is to try to go back to the roots of what made you like Japanese again and use the nostalgia to try and rekindle what made it fun. If it doesn’t work, then maybe it’s just time to find a new hobby. :\
June 13, 2012 at 10:06 pm #31825This reminds me of a Tofugu article John wrote a few months ago http://www.tofugu.com/2012/04/30/how-to-conquer-the-intermediate-plateau-of-japanese/

I too can recommend idols. Might seem strange, but think about it. You will build an interest where you can almost only get stuff in Japanese, and it is a lot of fun :D
June 14, 2012 at 9:19 am #31836New to Japanese culture (and languge), but when people say “Idols”, do they mean the Japanese Pop Stars and celebrities? I.e. becoming a fan, following their progress?
June 14, 2012 at 9:55 am #31840I’ve been wondering that too…I’ve always assumed it had something to do with porn, but I gather thats not the case…

↑Also, theres always AV idols, and thats specifically for porn if you are wondering. And no, that is not what we mean lol. Though I do not know what kind of idols Tsetycoon13 aligns him/her self with.
