Hello! So along with using this website I’ve taken a summer intro Japanese course, and right now I’m in annother intro Japanese course at my college. In the class I’m currently in, one grammar pattern they stress is using “は” for negatives. For example:

ハンバーガーは食べません。

あそこに猫はありません。

So basically you change particles such as を or が to は  when expressing a negative. However, I didn’t actually learn that in my summer class and I don’t we learn it here either?? Even with negatives, we’ve kept those same particles.

So are both correct? Or are there certain times where you use は and don’t?
