I feel loaded with vocab what do i do? lol
April 29, 2012 at 9:01 am #30028I feel that way every time I get a new list! For some reason a couple vocab will ‘stick’ almost instantly while others give me problems for weeks. I pick these low hanging fruit first and add a word or two a day until I have the whole list. I don’t move on until I know the vocab.
I also constantly review old lists. I have several electronic flashcard decks of around 10 to 15 words that I go over every day. I don’t depend on Anki for this because the intervals get too long but instead use just a card flipping program. Quizlet can be used and there are mobile versions.
As I’ve mentioned in other posts I like FlashCardlet on my iPod Touch. It uses Dropbox and can also download Quizlet decks. When I know the vocab it’s easy to flip thru the decks and refresh my brain.
Kanji vocab is the toughest for me.
April 29, 2012 at 9:03 am #30029Kanji vocab is why I did RTK, it’s way easier to remember compounds when you know the meaning of the kanji by themselves…I think it is at least. Some of them make sense when put together so that in itself reminds you of what the word is.
Though it should be stated sometimes the “raw” meaning of a kanji does not always show up in a word you’d expect it to.
April 29, 2012 at 2:29 pm #30042It should be possible to handle about 15-20 words a day.. I know it sounds silly when you look at a vocab sheet and just think ‘wtf do all these bit’s of chicken scratch and hiragana mean!?’ – This is mainly to do with the method.. Remembering brand new words with no “hook” on them is pretty hard, and usually only 3-4 a day with intense repetition.. bur rote is boring.
I’m going to say it.. iKnow.. Seriously.. Vocab is so simple with that.. Audio, sentences, Images… If only it was also scratch and sniff..
Textfugu for me does grammar and explanations very well.. however Anki for Vocab, even though it is strong SRS just doesn’t seem to help.. I had the very same issues you did, got frustrated and nearly quit because I thought “If I can’t even remember 3 vocab words, how the hell am I going to learn an entire language before I die” – I suffered through, discovered iKnow and kicked myself for not using it properly.. Try the free 5 lessons thing and really spend time on each word/sentence – look up the Kanji at Jisho + Kanjidamage – Take it all in and move on.. Using that method, i’ve easily got 20 odd words to stick in an hour session.
Keep at it with the vocab, it gets way easier once you push through the first 100 words! :D
May 6, 2012 at 7:31 pm #30380Wow, thanks for mentioning iKnow. I just did the trial and it’s amazing. Anki is good for custom Textfugu decks, but the pre-made stuff for iKnow is great supplemental material. I love the use of Kanji with example sentences, and great audio with pictures. I’m totally going to get the yearly subscription after the trial ends. If you do so the price goes down to 600円/m or roughly $90 a year. Which really isn’t too bad considering it’s usefulness for teach you lots and lots of vocab efficiently.
