Hi,
I’m planning on my third trip to Japan in a few months time and want to improve my limited Japanese skills so I can converse a little beyond the very basics and better read Japanese signs. It also makes it easier to find things when shopping in the great Japanese record stores!
Beyond impending travel I’m hoping to keep building on my Japanese skills. I’ve found classes haven’t worked for me in the past but Text Fugu looks like a great way to learn.

January 7, 2014 at 1:17 am #43187Your third trip? Take me with you? I’m in Australia too. =)
Where have you been? Did you take photos?
January 7, 2014 at 1:36 am #43188I went record bin diving when I was in Japan January 2013. There is some real gold buried in the records bins around Japan.
I’m not sure if you went record shopping last time but, the record shops in Tokyo were really tucked away and often upstairs in a building with little signage. I only found them from digging through google. Apparently this book can be really useful if you’re really serious about finding some vinyl. http://blog.cdandlp.com/2011/02/record-map-japanese-record-stores-guide.html

Could have sworn there used to be a “delete” button.

January 7, 2014 at 11:46 am #43200Hello there, thanks for the replies.
Joel – photos? A truckload. Here’s some links:
2005 trip to Tokyo/Kyoto/Nara (includes Tokyo Disneyland and a few exterior shots of the Studio Ghibli Museum – http://www.flickr.com/photos/bonitoclub/sets/72057594050996002/2007 trip – Same cities with the addition of Osaka – includes some pics from the Fushimi Inari shrine with the amazing Tori gates that go up the mmountain, areas such as Ueno and Asakusa and a little from Takarauzka and the Osamu Tezuka museum. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bonitoclub/sets/72157603394789801/
Zach – I planned ahead for some of the record shops – the excellent RECO-Fan chain and the more pricey Disk Union, but I stumbled across many by accident such as Yellow Pop, Hi-Fi and a some in Kyoto that I can’t remember the names of. Prices were generally pretty good except when you get into the serious collectors market. I filled a lot of holes in my Kahimi Karie and Pizzicato Five collections mostly from inexpensive second hand purchases. There was one shop I wanted to go to called Baby Pop which I eventually found on the 5th floor of a building above a Lawson convenience store – but it was shut. :(
Thanks for the link to the Record Store Guide. I might get hold off one of those this time to take some of the guess work out of it!

Love them. Looks like you went to a lot of the same places I did, though I went in the summer, so I didn’t get all those lovely autumn colours. We kept a blog, but I didn’t upload many photos to that. I did make a digital scrapbook, though – uploaded the pages to Facebook, but they’ve been shrunk down a bit to fit, and I’m not sure whether you can view the album without friending me. Just in case, the album is here.
