By the time I’m 18 I want to be as fluent as a person who has never gone to Japan can be, UNLESS I go to Japan before then. Who knows. I’m almost 14 so I have a little over 4 years to go :P On a side note: 50 kanji till I finish RTK 1 w00t, now I can start with teh vocabulary.
October 30, 2011 at 10:15 am #19981@Mark Weber: Wouldn’t you argue that the pronunciation/syllabic/phonological/”whatever the hell it’s called” system is harder for English? Both languages are difficult in their own ways.
@Mark: The only way you could get anywhere close to 2 years for full “fluency” is if… actually, I can’t think of a way.. If you devoted 2 years of your life *solely* to learning Japanese, it could be possible, but unless you’re really well-off, you need a job (and thus school) to support yourself while you learn, which means you can’t devote all your time to it. I think you’re underestimating just how much learning a language involves, really. It’s not easy and it takes a long time with lots of work. I just don’t want people getting their hopes up too high, that’s all. By all means, if you’re “fluent” in two years and can hold conversations like a native, please let us know ;) You could be like Khatzumoto and write about your experiences and how you did it :P
@Armando: Congratz, buddy ;) I finished back in February but I can still remember how good it felt to be done. And when I say “done”, I mean “finished working through the book”: I’m still doing reviews to this day XD The keywords are becoming less and less useful these days, but so far they’ve helped to no end :)
October 30, 2011 at 4:06 pm #19984Well I’ve only recently started on textfugu, one of the main reasons is that I am hoping to start uni doing Japanese with possibly business next September so figured that giving myself a head start would be a good thing, so with uni course plus study year in Japan that will bout 5 years total which I think should set me up well for phase two which is to move to Japan, and then its a case of adding to what I know , I am not expecting to be fluent but competent, Its really all about immersion that’s why I cant wait to actually go there for an extended period , got two weeks planned in Tokyo at end of 2012 which I am so
oooooooo looking forward too :)October 31, 2011 at 4:33 pm #20251It is always a day away.
October 31, 2011 at 7:36 pm #20254I want to be able to hold crudely fashioned conversation with my Japanese partners within a year. I at least want to hash out Japanese formed as well as their English. When that happens, I’ll figure out my next goal. I’d like to learn at a faster rate though so I can help my husband learn. He needs to learn it for work as well, even more so than I do, so time is a tickin’.
