So I’m not finished yet, but I’m already thinking/worrying about what studying resource to turn to after I finish Textfugu. The flow, especially when it comes to things like the order topics and kanji (okay, especially kanji) is so different from other textbooks that I’m almost certain I’m going to basically have to start from scratch with whatever I pick up next…but it’s not like I have fifty years to wait for EtoEto to get released and developed beyond beginner/early intermediate content, either. I’ve got things to do!
That’s why I’m wondering – what did all of you do after finishing Textfugu? What resources did you move on to in your studies, and what did and didn’t work?
May 18, 2017 at 10:28 pm #50266I used TextFugu as a side resource while studying at uni, where we used Nakama as the class textbook. Once we finished Nakama, we moved on to Tobira, so that’s a possible option for something to continue with. There may be a bit of a gap between TextFugu and Tobira, though, so you might have to pick up another textbook anyway…
May 24, 2017 at 1:22 am #50271Hi Joel,
How would you compare Nakama/Tobira to Genki? OK to use both? I have to be honest, I have a feeling I am moving too quickly and trying to do as little as possible to avoid running out of resources to study anytime soon. I find Genki filling in very nicely, all the gaps I found on Textfugu from Seasons 4 and up.
May 24, 2017 at 2:44 am #50273Honestly, I couldn’t say personally, as I’ve never used Genki. I’ve heard that Nakama and Genki are roughly equivalent, though, and Tobira actually comes with lists of kanji that are assumed knowledge in Tobira but aren’t taught in Nakama or Genki, with separate lists for each.
Just encountered this similar thread while poking around for more info. =)

I used Genki 1/2 + An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese back in college, so what I may end up doing is a quick review of my Genki books (ignoring their kanji sections, even though I’m going to learn to write SOMEDAY b/c Koichi’s insistence that it isn’t necessary might be my least favorite thing about TF/WK). After that, I take your advice and check out Tobira; I remember HATING An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese, so I’d rather not pick it up again if possible. |D
And thank you for finding that thread, Joel! I’m still reading it, but all the talk about how reading is a huge gap in what TextFugu offers makes me even sadder that the new direction of EtoEto seems to be moving away from the inclusion of reading practice rather than towards…
