(is there a search function on this board? sorry if any of this has already been addressed)
OK, I’ve just finished season 2, and have a ton of extra time to say, study some anki decks lately. I’ve been wondering about the “Ultimate” decks I’ve seen from tofugu…
Are these going to overlap the vocabulary we are getting by just progressing through lessons on textfugu?
Should I start them now since I have the extra time, say 40 or so new words a week and run them separately from the textfugu lessons?
Or should I wait until a later season, or are they even necessary at all if I plan on completing the entire textfugu program?
Or if you have a better idea of how I can spend all my extra time, I’m open to any suggestions!
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
April 3, 2012 at 6:21 pm #28868I’ve done things all out of order by doing some Textfugu, then RTK, then back to Textfugu. For what it’s worth, I’d recommend getting ahead on the kanji and related vocabulary instead of the ultimate decks. There’s a lot of kanji-related vocabulary, and I find it a lot easier to digest – since the readings help to relate kanji and kana – than random vocabulary, where I have to come up with a separate mnemonic to remember each word. There’s also a lot of overlap between the ultimates and the kanji-related vocabulary on Textfugu, so by the time you get through the 7- or 8-stroke vocab (yes, I know that there’s no 8-stroke yet, but there will be soon), you’ll already have learned much of the ultimate vocabulary anyway.
Of course, if you have some spare time, you could just do RTK instead. There’s a bunch of threads on here about RTK, so I’ll spare you the speech.
April 4, 2012 at 5:02 am #28881Ultimate Vocab stuff starts being introduced at the beginning of season 5, but if you feel like you’re got the time to get ahead, absolutely go for it. That way when you got to season 5, you can just think, “I did this months ago! Easy mode!”
April 5, 2012 at 8:22 am #28921I’d say vocab is the most important thing to learn and to work on, so yes, go for it :D If I remember correctly, Ultimate Nouns contains the vast majority of the “in-Season” noun vocab, and Ultimate Verbs/Adjectives contain *all* the “in-Season” stuff. I whizzed through a large chunk of the Ultimate decks because TextFugu had covered a lot of the words before, so it makes more sense to just go directly onto Ultimate.
April 5, 2012 at 10:19 am #28923Do the ultimate decks include Kanji or is it all Kana?
Edit: Trying to decide whether to bother with those or just start off my Core2k journey.

April 5, 2012 at 12:15 pm #28925I think it’s better to do all of the ultimate decks before the content for the seasons. You can finish them all within 2 weeks for sure. I started doing 30 words a day because I just wanted to finish them.

AnonymousIf you really are free, then I say go for it! Ultimate vocab is really quite simple to learn, and it’s just vocab. It doesn’t tie in with any of the lessons, and learning them will only increase your vocab arsenal. :)
