    Howdy folks!

I’ve just wrapped up the free Season 1 and bought my lifetime membership to keep going. The idea of learning Japanese has been in my mind for a while now, so it’s about time that I get started. A friend of mine was also interested in learning Japanese, so we’ve been keeping each other motivated (though he’s not using TextFugu).

Anyway, I’m from Canada. I’m currently a master’s student in Computer Science at UofT. Last summer I got a really good dose of Miyazaki films which helped to fuel my interest in learning Japanese. On the whole, my motivations lie in wanting to understand this culture which is so very different from my own, in wanting to understand Miyazaki films and Japanese folklore, and for the challenge of learning a language that’s structurally and visually different from English (like any good Canadian I know enough French to get by, but it’s too similar to English to be really challenging).

Well, that’s a little about me. Hello!

Ben – Welcome! Do you work in the Computer Science industry yet or are you going to school full time? My husband is in IT, specializing in virtualizations. He loves it!

Good luck with your degree and your Japanese studies!

    Hi Cassandra.

I’m still in school full-time—I expect to complete my thesis around the end of the year or in January. My research group does a lot of work in virtualization, though I’m not involved in it myself (my research is in databases systems, particularly data structures for database indexes). I have, however, been to numerous talks on the subject, and I agree that it’s very cool.

Thanks for your well wishes. I’ve really beeng enjoying Japanese—and especially TextFugu—thus far.

Good luck with your thesis. I’m sure the end of the year will come quickly. I read your post to my husband and he started telling me all about the internet debates about database indexing and such. It’s a bit over my head but sounds interesting!
