To be honest I wasnt sure where this topic should go so I just put it here sorry if it is in the wrong place.
Anyways I found that studying while working out or just after working out actually helps me memorize things and I seem to be a lot more focused on what I am studying, I was wondering if anyone else has ever tried this and if you have has it worked for you?
I would love all of your guy’s opinions on this.
June 9, 2012 at 10:37 am #31624I just converted my desk to a “stand up” desk, so now I stand while working. I also stand while doing flashcard reps and sometimes stand while watching videos. It’s only been a few days, but so far I like it.
I wouldn’t necessarily call it exercise, but I think it has some health benefits, and it makes me feel more mentally alert. It’s sort of a tradeoff between being more mentally alert but more physically tired. I think that tradeoff is worth making, because for me it’s mental alertness that counts.
June 9, 2012 at 11:00 am #31626If you put it in pseudo-science talk, it would make sense cause as you work out, you get your blood flowing to your brain which means more oxygen to your brain.
I have no idea if this is true but I remember doing a lab experiment in school but it required an exercise of some sort and then we were able to solve things faster than before, after exercising.
I wouldn’t know anything about it really, but I listen to the recorded Japanese radio or podcasts when I go out biking
June 9, 2012 at 3:06 pm #31628As long as it’s not having some kind of negative impact on your exercising, I don’t see why not.
@jkl: Does it not get tiring, standing all the time? :D Or do you alternate between standing and sitting?
June 9, 2012 at 3:12 pm #31629I think this would have the opposite effect on me, I’ll try it at at the college gym sometime, but then again I’d look like a bit of a mong running while trying to do reviews on my iPad, typing would be annoying!

I can’t really go more than an hour or two without taking a break at the moment. Here is some more information about the topic if anyone is interested. The idea is that exercise is good, but sitting all day is bad, and exercise doesn’t make up for it.
June 9, 2012 at 6:05 pm #31631WOW I am so glad to see so many responses and different opinions on this subject!
jkl: I can’t stand still for long I have horrible adhd so I have to be moving, I have my treadmill set up right in front of my tv/computer (i turned my tv screen into a computer screen) and I work out while listening to Japanese audio language books or watch videos on youtube on the language. I also lug out my text book once in a while to go over text since I have one of those book holders on the treadmill.
missingno15: that does make since I think I remember something like that during my science class years ago but I could be wrong, either way the exercise is good for the body regardless of any other benefits that might come from it :)
MisterM2402: It doesn’t seem to be having any negative effects on me at the moment so that is good but I agree with you completely not everyone can do the same things.
Yggbert: I thought the same thing at first too, I thought how could it improve my studying its just gunna make me hella tired but it did the exact opposite…. amazing how the body works.
June 9, 2012 at 6:46 pm #31633JKL: How did you go about converting your desk?
June 9, 2012 at 8:35 pm #31634I think jkl has the right idea. Its the reason why I eat standing up because I know I’m gonna be back on my computer for most of my day. Though in my house, instead of eating on a table, we eat on a counter and the counter is a good height for me to stand and eat. Most of my day is spent JUST SITTING and I don’t have fancy chairs or anything, just a wooden one so my butt really hurts most of the time.

I have a desk from Ikea with legs that have a long screw running through the middle, and you can sort of unscrew the two pieces to make the legs longer.

That gets the table top to a fairly good height for working, but my monitor was still too low so I put it up on some books. The setup has a slight wobble to it, but it doesn’t bother me too much.
This article has some more information about what you can do with stuff from Ikea, and the first paragraph has a link to another article about the subject.

June 12, 2012 at 4:46 pm #31741I wouldn’t mind trying a standing desk, but I just don’t have the room or the money >.<
