みな、こんにちは!Or at this time of night, I guess that would be こんばんは. I am a long time wannabe speaker of Japanese, having been pretty much trying to find a way to learn the language since I was about 12, but not really having much of an idea where to start for self-study and having any opportunity to ever take classes continually snatched from my fingertips. But now, after a friend showed me textfugu (and the situation came to a head by an imminent trip to Japan – the plan is currently this April) I am finally going to learn it. Finally. Just you all watch.
My biggest problem with the whole shebang is I’m a perfectionist, and have this extreme reluctance to move on until I am utterly perfect at what needs to be learned this time, which means I am currently stalled learning hiragana, because I can do it all mostly – recognize the characters, or come up with the correct one with a little effort – but I don’t know the characters as well as English yet and, to my brain, this is a problem that must be corrected before anything else can be done! But I’m working on not letting this stop me (it’s good enough for now, I say) and so on we’ll march, singing together as we go step in step and hand in hand.
Or maybe the singing is too much.
Regardless, I am happy and excited to finally be here and finally be learning!

I agree – it’s good enough for now. Considering (based on the information in your post) you’re at least twelve, that means you’ve had minimum eight to ten years to become familiar with English. You’ve been working at hiragana for what, a month? Give it time. =P I have to admit, I’ve been at it two years, and it’s still a struggle to read a solid paragraph of hiragana. Kanji, however, makes it much easier.
Also, tell us about your holiday. Where are you going? Will you be keeping a travel blog? Are you going to show us lots of photos? =P
January 9, 2013 at 8:38 pm #37924Hahaha yes, I’m actually 3 days away from being 24 (urk, weird to think about, I think I’m supposed to be acting like an adult or something by this point). It’s also super nice to hear about Kanji making something much easier, I’m used to just hearing horror stories about how difficult it is to learn!
Weeeeeell, the plan right now is earlish April, at the moment I’m planning on being there for a week during the second week or so, with the hopes of catching the cherry blossoms. I actually hadn’t considered keeping a travel blog, but now that you mention that’s a pretty good idea, and I might just end up doing that. I am not the best picture taker in the world, but yes, that is good too. I can post them to the aforementioned blog ;)
January 9, 2013 at 8:57 pm #37925The location of the cherry blossom front is fairly easy to predict, so make sure you check the forecast to see where it’s going to be while you’re there. =)
January 9, 2013 at 9:11 pm #37927Oh, hey, useful! I knew that they came at roughly the same time, but I didn’t know there were actual predictions that you could actually look up year-by-year. This will for sure help.
January 9, 2013 at 9:58 pm #37928The Wikipedia page even has an equation. =P
