I agree. Even if you’re typing them up, it helps a lot. I think you should be at the part where Koichi gets you to use lang-8. Make sure you add as many Kanji as you can to your posts.

I would suggest that you physically write out each Kanji you learn. If you don’t want to learn how to write them properly, don’t worry about stroke order, just try to piece them together with the radicals so your brain holds on to them better. If you want to learn how to write properly, there are a ton of sites and phone apps that will show you how.

I would also suggest that you create a master list of your Kanji in an excel file. Each time you learn new ones, slot them in, that way you have them saved for easy reference.

You can also open Anki and click on Browse at the top, select your Kanji deck, and skim through it for the Kanji you’re after.

I think the death thing is often just an excuse rather than saying I have no F’in clue why.

I wouldn’t say that it’s worthless to think of Kun and On when you are a beginner, as it can be highly effective in keeping things straight in your head. The key is to not get hung up on it. At all.

As mentioned, use it as a guideline, but expect every new word you learn to break the guidelines, and be really happy when it doesn’t.

It is much more effective to focus on how each Kanji is used in the specific instance you are learning it than keeping track of if it’s On or Kun, but it is still a good idea to take note of the difference, as it will get you in the practice of making those connections, just don’t make it your focus, especially as a beginner.

    Welcome to TextFugu!

You’ll find that the classes will help a lot in starting you out. In my experience the first two levels are usually really good then I get bulldozed by the third, being way too overwhelming. You might have a more natural knack for languages though.

Japanese is taught in a lot of Australian primary and secondary schools.

Until recently there was also a particularly high number of Japanese tourists, once again location a likely culprit, and there were quite a few business partnerships with Japanese companies.

Though most people you ask will claim that is still the case, if you know what you are looking at, you’ll see there’s been a massive decline in this during the last decade or so.

No idea why that would be though. Though there’s a possibility that it’s nearly as strong as it was, but there’s been a huge influx of non-Japanese Asians and business flooding in, which may no longer cause the Japanese to stick out as much. So maybe the Japanese presence hasn’t declined much, just been masked by other Asian presences.

Yeah I would recommend signing up for WaniKani just for the forums alone, as that’s free, even if you never decide to subscribe, as there are a lot of advanced students over there.

This is the old updates thread.

I posted a new updates thread here:

    http://www.textfugu.com/bb/topic/textfugu-updates/

What’s listed there is the last mention of specifics on the update that I’m aware of.

I use WK, but there are a ton of posts that are made over there in just as many different threads and when the staff do mention updates they are likely to be made in some random thread that has nothing to do with updates or TF at all, so most users will completely miss them. You just have to hope that another user who has seen it will mention it at some point in a thread that you actually are reading.

I read every thread here, but no way do I have the time to do the same over there, so I only read threads that look interesting or if it might seem like I can actually help out, but there are so many more advanced learners over there, I’m generally not needed for that.

That was only a couple months ago, so I am guessing it will be at least another 4 months or so before there will been enough new work done to warrant another look at it. I can tell that Viet is still working on the CMS due to his interactions (or lack there of) at WK.

    Welcome to TextFugu!

There’s kind of a crazy amount of Aussies here actually. If you look at the intro posts, you’ll notice the trend. I’m an Aussie too btw.

Have you taken any Japanese courses at TAFE? Even though they aren’t fantastic at teaching you the language to fluency, it is a really good primer to get you started, as you should have a native teacher, and they will be able to set you on the right path with pronunciations and other things that can be difficult to grasp from text alone.

Oh yes, don’t bother being shamed here for listing J-RPGs as your motivation for learning. In general, the majority of new users will state a desire to some day work in Japan or at least visit Japan, so they think it would be a good idea to learn the language first in order to fully appreciate the culture (which they are absolutely correct in). However Anime/Manga is by far the single most popular specific reason listed, followed by J-RPGs and J-Pop/J-Rock.
